[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French] |
Coot (Fulica atra)
Order : Gruiformes
Family : Rallidae
Genus : Fulica
Height : 36 à 39 cm
Wingspan : 70 à 80 cm
Weight : Female : 575 à 800 g ; Male : 650 à 900 g
Longevity : 18 ans
Status : sedentary nichor, migrating, wintering.
Larger than the common moorhen, the coot is a bird of round form, with an entirely black plumage, and with a pure white beak and facial sheald. It has a duck body with a pointed beak, round and reds eyes, and greenish legs.
The nest is a voluminous construction made of vegetable matter banked up on emerged vegetation, in sometimes 30 cm of water, sometimes reinforced if the water level rises. The interior basin is papered with grass. It is placed rather high and it is often quite visible.
The female lays from 5 to 9 eggs larger and less mottled than those of moorhen. They are shining white with some patches. Incubation starts before the litter is complete and goes a little more than three weeks. The eggs hatch over several days.
The cubs remain in the nest a few days then they are divided between the two parents. The female keeps the nest with its half litter and the male builds a special platform for his. The cubs feed only towards the 4 weeks age and start to fly one month later.
Original improved with Photoshop CS as follows:
Lightening of dark tone: 25%
Reinforcement of clear tone: 5%
Contrast: +15
Cropped

Heavy construction rather ;-) I saw coot's nest in our Botanic Garden but they're much lighter. Good colours and POV but first of all very interesting observation.
