Drone Fly (Eristalis crassipes)

The family Syrphidae or Hover flies to which this critter belongs consists of 38 genera and 230 species just in South Africa. They are conspicuous bee- or wasp-mimics, with yellow and black stripes. They are distinguishable on close exam by “false margin” to edge of wing, formed by veins running parallel to wing margin.

The genera Eristalis or Drone flies are the largest of the hover flies. The wingspan could easily reach 20mm. They are stocky bee-mimic with black eyes, grey thorax, orange- and black abdomen (black terminally). Slow moving when feeding and usually found on small yeast-smelling white flowers.

Their larvae are “rat-tailed maggots” and are found in putrid water with decaying organic matter.

I got my Guide to SA insects today. Now I can ID some of the insects I haven't posted. The drone fly sits on an apricot blossom. I hope you like it.

Heerlijk shot Gerhard,
Prachtige macro, goede compositie, goede kleuren en details, erg goed werk.

magnifique composition !
les tons orangés de l'abeille ressorte a merveille sur le blanc pure des fleurs.
l'arriere plant est bien flous ce qui met encore plus en valeur les sujets.
l'abeille devrait etre legerement plus net.
tres belle photo ;)

Great stuff Gerhard, you know how much I love these flies. Good POV and DOF, the composition is very good too. Is the species you mention an african species? I have some nice pictures of Drones that I hope to post soon, maybe you will be interested.

Pragtige hadida:) Very good macro work here. The image is sharp and the DOF good. Thanks for posting

With all this posts, Ricardo, Paul, etc this fly is becomming very popular. This is a beutiful photo, with that detail maybe I would have the temptation to increase sharpness a bit more.

Yes, I like your drone fly sits on an apricot blossom. Good sharpness, not too much. Good composition. Good macro like usual, Gerhard.

Pretty macro... perhaps is not the best one in sharpness, but the colorful one, the perspective and composition turn it an excellent post.
You do not forget Gerhard that you need to complete your critics them of makes a pair of day (I believe that if is not rated, spent a time, they disappear).

Gerhard, I think you did very well with this macro. Like the composition & the angle/perspective on the subject. Excellent detail & the contrast is good even with all that white. Very nice!
