Mating time has come again.

Fresh colours of spring all around Vienna in these days are a good reason to interrupt my report on Cuba for a posting from my native country.

The edges of vineyards south of Vienna are a good place to meet some surprisingly colourful and large lizards. Very wary and quick, they will usually draw your attention just by noisily darting through the fresh green vegetation into shelters in the scrubs, giving you little chance to see them for more than a few very short moments. You need to be lucky and very patient, and moving really slowly to approach a male lizard defending an outlook position on a rock from where it can spot a bride or chase away rivaling males.

Returning to the same spot in intervals of several minutes, this one, a fully grown young male, finally allowed me to get close enough for a decent shot. It was the first time that I could notice its terrifying claws as long and thin as sharp needles.

Visiting the same place a few days later, I even had a short chance to see male and female together - well hidden in the grass.

For more details on the species please see a previous posting taken exactly three years ago.

Location: Eichkogel, Moedling: Piles of stones along the vineyards.

The camera:
SONY DSC-HX1, 3456 x 2592 pixel, sRGB, 100mm tele (equivalent 560mm at full size SLR), F/5.2, 1/800 sec., ISO-125, bias -0.3, hand held, no flash, 25.04.2010, 12:25.

Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, downsized to the web, selectively resharpened, levels slightly adjusted.

Thank you for looking. Have a very good day.

Hello Peter,
Congratulations on this superb close portrait of a male L. viridis in stunning breeding colours.
The technical quality showing the turned head is top class and the composition on the contrasting limestone is excellent.
Thanks and have a good weekend,

Hello Peter,
Green Lizards seem to be very popular at the moment! I hope we'll see one soon too! I like your POV and close view showing very sharp details and the blue/green colours are really stunning! You show the impressive claws very nicely here too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Peter
Buon week-end.

Sabine - wishnugaruda

Wow, what amazing colors!
I was not aware that European lizards could be so colorful.
I really like the pose, peeking over the rock.
Wonderful sharp details, Peter.

Lieber Peter,

Hallo Peter
I have been very busy but now I have time to leave my penny of thoughts on this most beautiful image. What an absolute beauty you managed to photograph here, and the colours are not only truly awesome but display so beautifully on the screen. I just love the way the different colours blend in with one another. This image is super sharp with lots and lots of praiseworthy details to appreciate. Besides the lovely vibrant mating colours, the clarity and detail of the scales on this reptile is so pretty and the nails on the Eastern European Green Lizard very interesting to look at. An excellent image, which is indeed a painters dream. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Peter and many thanks for your so kind comments on my photos.
I really do appreciate them a lot.
I hope you've been doing well and, as i see here, still exploring the beautiful natural world around you ;)
This is a lovely capture in which you took full advantage of your very nice long zoom and managed to get so nice and up-close to this gorgeous male. You are right, L. viridis does display these very vibrant colors while mating season and the males are just a pleasure to watch and photograph...hope to find some handsome ones myself, this year.
I really like the way you've composed this, too - with a bit more room in the direction he's looking towards but also with that rock well in the frame - to show a bit of the natural habitat.
Excellent sharpness and spot-on exposure on top, this is a lovely post, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
PS: having visited Virgen and looking at all the maps and photos, i can clearly see why you name it as one of your favorites in the spring...i hope to revisit it one day and explore it again, when its nice, warm and full of wildlife :)

Lieber Peter, nochmals,

Wirklich Klasse!

Hi Peter,
Love the turquoise and green combo here.
Great details too..Along with those "needle" sharp claws in full view.
Can't think of a better reason to take a break from that report on Cuba :)
Well done!

Hi, dear Peter.
I was very pleased to read your kind comments and with opportunity to visit TN and to watch your amazing gallery. If I am not mistaken you use new camera. However, every camera in your hands produces true masterpieces. This one is no exception. All three shots are wonderful and give a nice idea about the cute animal and surroundings. Colours, sharpness, lights and composition at last are stunning. Well done and my warm greetings.

Hi Peter,
Fantastic portrait, great eye contact with the Lizard prince. :-) Beautiful colors and details also, perfect sharpness and pleasant composition, taken from a nice PoV. I really love your timing also that only the head and some legs are visible, the other parts of the body are hidden behind the rock. A true masterpiece. Bravo!
Best regards, László
