|Spotted Wood Owl|
Size: 48 cm
Distinguished from similar and sympatic Brown Wood Owl, S. leptogrammica, of the oriental region, by wide (not narrow) barring on the under-parts and spots on the wings.
A deep, rapid who-ow similar to distant dog’s bark.
Occurs in lowland forest, especially in forest edges, secondary growth; in nearby cultivated areas and parks with large trees. Starts calling at dusk and can sometimes be located by its call and spotted perched high in a tree.
A rare resident breeder throughout the island.
