Earth star (Geastrum sp.)

Earth stars are similar to puffballs but with a layered coat. The outer layer splits and peels back into 5 to 10 petal-like arrays, thus clearing a space around the mouth of the fungi. Spore dispersal is then achieved by the action of rain drops falling on it. The spores are brown with warts.

I don´t know which species is it. I found this first time. I had not tripod, I put my camera on my bag :-)

Hi Jan! I envy you! I never saw before this fantastic fungus. Looks like taken from sf movie with its spaceship-like shapes. Superb.

That is an amazing picture, Jan. I have never seen anything like that. A great shot, with very crisp details and fantastic POV. The light is very good as well. Well done and TFS. : )

Amazing shot!
Never seen this before.

Great shot Jan. Well seen, good soft light but still managed to bring the colours out well. I woul dhave maybe cropped a little more of the litter at the back as it distracts a bit. TFS & regards, Rob

This is a perfect picture. Very nice light and subtle colour shading. Amazing DOF. I have never seen this fungus in nature, what a pity! TFS! Michal

An excellent earth star. I like the low angle of view and the depth of field.
