[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It snowed again today in Okotoks. As a result, I didn't get many pictures. So, I thought that I would post a shot from earlier in May at Frank Lake. I took an in flight photo of one of the Marbled Godwits (Limosa fedoa) that I posted two weeks ago. These are large shorebirds about 46-48 cm (18-19 in) in length. They have a wingspan of about 81 cm (32 in). (From iBird Explorer for iPod/iPhone.) This species is the most common large shorebird throughout southern Alberta. (From Birds of Alberta Field Guide.) Their bills are so long that one would assume that they would have an easy time obtaining food when they probe in the shallow water and mudflats -- according to iBird Explorer, they forage for worms, mollusks, crustaceans, insects and aquatic plants. The birds evidently feel that their bill is not long enough, because they like to thrust their bills so far into the mud that their face is sometimes covered in it. Happily, in my photo, the bird's head is quite clean, so its features can be seen well.

Hello John,
A great in-flight capture of a Marbled Godwit, a species rarely seen on TN. The sharpness, lighting and colours are first class and the composition against a blue sky excellent.

bird photography i am loving most, i have 54 species
of birds in-flight photos, great close-up in-flight
photo of the Marbled Godwit with very fine POV at its
level like if we where also a bird flying with him,
superbly focused with great sharpness and details,
that very small catch-light change completaly

This is a magnificent capture of a Godwit in flight. His wings are in the up position showing off his plumage and body shape so nicely. HIs colours and impressive beak are shown off nicely against the blue sky. Well done.

Aren't we so lucky to live in Alberta and have snow at the end of May.

Flawless in-flight capture of this pretty marbled godwit, you've focused in on it perfectly. Great exposure with 1/1250 seconds to freeze the movement. The DOF looks like it worked well too, impressive capture!
