Cupido minimus Mating +1!!
Today I went back the same meadow that I visited on the cool morning last Monday. But today it was hot and sunny and the difference in insect behavious was very strong.
This meadow has a large, thriving colony of Small Blues and I was hoping to be able to get photographs of mating behaviour. With some patience, this proved to be possible. I was snapping away at my second mating pari of C. minimus when another male arrived and tried to force himself into the act.
In this picture, the male (right) and female (left) are mating, but you can also see the abdomen of the second male at the back, as he tries to join in. If you look at the position of the interloper's wings and then note the position of his abdomen, you will see how much he is twisting in order to make his presence felt. Quite an athletic feat. I have not before seen such an obvious attempt at joining in from a third party. Interesting behaviour.
This was taken at f/22, hand held in bright sunlight but also with fill-in flash to overcome the strong shadows from blades of grass etc. Thanks for looking.
