Melitaea punica (Algerian Fritillary) [in Turk. Cezayirli İparhan]

I encountered with this rarely seen beautiful fritillary near the Beyşehir Lake (Eflatun Pınarı, Beyşehir, Konya) during my last trip to Antalya region. Since I encountered some incompatible explanations on its id (punica or telona), I accepted this beauty as Melitaea punica. Hope that I am right!:) I also attached a WS showing the underparts of this beauty. If I am right on its id, I think this is the 2nd post of the species on TN.

TFL and Have a nice day!

This colourful fritillary is distributed from N. Africa across Anatolia (Turkey) to Transcaucasia, Iran and the S Europe. Both the northern and the eastern borders of the distribution area of this species are unclear.

It prefers dry to semi-desert biotopes. Adult butterflies are on the wing between May and July. The close relative Melitaea phoebe is larger and black marking more strongly developed. In other close relative M. cinxia the submarginal fascia of uppersides of the hind wings with black spots.

Hello Bayram,
This is a truly wonderful capture - I can't think of a more perfect colour match between the subject and the background! Apart from that also an interesting and rarely seen species! Excellent sharp details of both butterfly and lichens. Interesting to see the underside too!

Dear Bayram,
How wonderful that you could find and photograph so well, a fresh specimen of a female Melitaea punica, so rarely seen by Europeans!
The composition with the red and grey lichen covered rock BG, the colours and sharpness make this a fine portrait of this species in open wing resting position.
The WS with closed wings is great too!

Tebrikler dostum ve cok tesekkür ederim!

Ovvvv... hemde en enderlerinden olanı. Muhteşem çekimler hocam.

Hellow Bayram,
Natural camaflauging colours of the butterfly and the what looks like licon [ i think] on the ground surface.Difficult scene to capture which you have done with perfection. The large eyes and white spots on the antennae is shown well as is the fine boby hairs with interseting colour patterns on the wings. Great job MF.

Ciao BBB. Razor detaisl and magnificent natural colours. Best contrats and light.

Good bright capture with powerful strong colors impeccable clarity and fantastic dept of field Bayram! I really like it!

Hi Bayram,
that's amazing - the butterfly has decided to sit on a place in the same colour like its wings - good protection against the birds.
Do you think he knows what he is doing to choose the orange place - or is it just fortune?
And my compliments for your good eyes to see this one with this camouflage.
Sharpness is perfect, colours so warm, again a wonderful post, I like it very much, thanks.
Greetings from the warm/hot Bavaria, we had 32 C today ;-)

Merhaba Bayram
brilliant capture of this Algerian Fritillary taken with crisp clear details, nice pose on this rock, the orange colors of his wings are almost the same color as the lichen and makes this image a bit different from the other butterfly shots, i like it very much
Have a good night

Hello Bayram,
I really miss your wonderful images, but I do look at your gallery from time to time. I love to see what beautiful creatures you have living in your part of the world, and your photos give us an excellent record of them in exceptional detail and color.
It is interesting to see how much the fritillary butterflies you have living in Turky look so similar to the ones we have here in the US.

Merhaba MF Prof Byram,
hope everything is fine with you.
This lovely Algerian Fritillary is really a beauty. The orange colours really stand out wonderfully with sharpness of the wings so pristine.
The hairs and the antenna is so clear in composition.
