Dianthus zonatus var. zonatus (Ringed Pink) [in Turk. Halkalı Karanfil]

Hi friends, indeed I’ve uploaded this species from Buldan (Denizli) before but this time from a different location (Çiftlik village, Banaz, Uşak province).

As I made before, today a special dedication to my late father Irfan SALIH GÖÇMEN who was died on 1994 while i was a young boy, for his valuable contributions in all steps of my life. The reason that I’m dedicating this flower to my father is due to his love of carnations. He would always carry one behind his ear, and capturing this image reminded me of his presence.

Ringed Pink is found only in West, Central and Southern Anatolia including Mediterranean Ecozone of Syria. Its flowering time is between May and August. Vertical range includes 700-2600 m. It prefers rocky sites and also fields.

TFL and Have a nice week!
Cheers,

Dianthus is a genus of about 300 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending south to north Africa, and one species (D. repens) in arctic North America. Common names include carnation (D. caryophyllus), pink (D. plumarius and related species) and sweet william (D. barbatus). The name Dianthus is from the Greek words dios ("god") and anthos ("flower"), and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus.

The species are mostly perennial herbs, a few are annual or biennial, and some are low subshrubs with woody basal stems. The leaves are opposite, simple, mostly linear and often strongly glaucous grey-green to blue-green. The flowers have five petals, typically with a frilled or pinked margin, and are (in almost all species) pale to dark pink. One species, D. knappii, has yellow flowers with a purple centre.

Dianthus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Cabbage Moth, Double-striped Pug, Large Yellow Underwing and The Lychnis. Also three species of Coleophora case-bearers feed exclusively on Dianthus; C. dianthi, C. dianthivora and C. musculella (which feeds exclusively on D. suberbus).

The colour pink may be named after the flower. The origin of the flower name 'pink' may come from the frilled edge of the flowers: the verb "pink" dates from the 14th century and means "to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern" (maybe from German "pinken" = to peck). Source: Collins Dictionary. The verb sense is also used in the name of pinking shears.

Good morning Bayram dostum!
A very nice portrayal of two Dianthus flowers. The composition, colours, lighting, neutral BG and clarity make this a fine image.
This is nice to view. Thanks for sharing this together with the excellent note. I didn't know the possible origin of the word 'pink'!
Have a good week,
Ivan

Hallo Bayram
The previous time you made a dedication to your beloved dad, I missed out on it and you pointed it out to me. This time I saw it and would love to leave my penny of thoughts. Besides the beautiful cerise carnation you used as dedication to your late father I can sense that you loved him very much and had great respect for him.
Looking at this pretty flower I can also understand why he had such a love for carnations as they are such beautiful flowers with fine detail, which is also seen so clearly in your posting. Thanks for sharing my friend and may you have a super day. Best regards.
Anna

Merhaba Bayram,
Time flies; I remember well your previous flower dedicated to your father.

And again I am saying - how proud he would be - if he could see you today as a famous, loved, grown-up man...

Carnations are among the most popular cut flowers, used in floral arrangements, corsages, and boutonnieres. In 1907 Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia selected the pink carnation as the symbol for Mother's Day. In Europe the carnation was formerly used as a treatment for fevers. It was also used to spice wine and ale during Elizabethan times, as a substitute for the more expensive clove.

Another perfect addition to your portfolio.

İyi bir hafta dilerim Bayram
Greetings from South Africa,
Ingrid

Hello Bayram,
I'm very fond of Dianthus flowers and this is a very beautiful close capture. Their colours stand out so well against the plain background and details are very sharp. Well composed too! I read your note with interest and never thought of 'pink' referring to the serrated edge even though I've used a pinking shears in dressmaking many times in the past!
Many thanks and best regards, Ulla

Merhaba sevgili arkadaşım,
This is a lovely capture to remember your dear father, who still always with you, specially when you walk in the nature. Exceptionnal artistic composition, with great colours and background. The light is coming from the flowers...
İyi akşamlar,
