The Large Red Damselfly, Pyrrhosoma nymphula, is a European damselfly. It is one of the first damselflies to emerge in the year.
It inhabits ponds and dykes, and occasionally slow-moving rivers.
Females occur in many colour forms, but all have yellow bands around the abdominal segments. They can easily be confused with Small red damselflies.
One of the most common damselflies, the Large Red Damselfly is often the first damselfly to emerge, usually in April or May. They inhabit a variety of waters, and on a summer day the dash of red perfectly complements the blue of Azure and Common Blue Damselflies.

Trotz auffälliger Färbung und häufigem Vorkommen wird diese Libellenart gelegentlich übersehen, da sie sich gern in der Vegetation verborgen hält.
Paarungsrad der Frühen Adonislibelle
Die Flugzeit der adulten Tiere reicht von April bis August. Damit ist die Frühe Adonislibelle neben dem Plattbauch (Libellula depressa) eine der ersten Libellenarten, die im Frühling beobachtet werden kann. Auf ihr zeitiges Erscheinen im Jahr geht der Namensteil „Frühe“ zurück.
Die Paarung erfolgt nur bei sonnigem Wetter während der frühen Morgenstunden im späten Frühjahr oder im Frühsommer. Zur Eiablage landen die Tiere im „Tandem“ auf schwimmenden oder aus dem Wasser ragenden Pflanzen. Das Weibchen heftet die Eier an Pflanzenteile unterhalb der Wasseroberfläche. Dazu taucht es oft nahezu vollständig im Wasser ein. Die Larven entwickeln sich im Wasser bis zum letzten Larvenstadium. In diesem Stadium überwintern sie und kriechen im nächsten Frühjahr an der Ufervegetation aus dem Wasser. Dort befreien sie sich aus ihrer Larvenhülle (Exuvie), und es beginnt ein neuer Zyklus

De vuurjuffer is een libel van de familie van de waterjuffers. Het is één van de weinige juffers die grotendeels rood gekleurd zijn.
De vuurjuffer is een grote juffer, lengte tot 36 mm. Het abdomen van beide geslachten van de vuurjuffer (imago) is opvallende rood, maar bij de mannetjes hebben enkel de laatste segmenten donkere banden, bij de vrouwjes zijn alle segmenten zwart getekend Het borststuk is donker met een rode of (bij de vrouwtjes) donkergele schouderstreep. De poten zijn zwart.
De eieren worden afgezet in stengels van drijvende waterplanten. De dieren vormen meestal een tandem voor de paring en de eileg. Het vrouwtje boort met haar legboor gaatjes in de stengel, en plaatst vervolgens in ieder gaatje een eitje.
Habitat
De vuurjuffer is een weinig eisende soort wat het voortplantingsbiotoop betreft. Ze is tevreden met stilstaand of licht stromend water, zoals beken, poelen, (tuin)vijvers, laagveengebieden, ze is ook niet veeleisend voor wat betreft de waterplanten waarop ze haar eieren legt.

net jammer dat het laatste puntje niet helemaal scherp is verder prima van scherpte.
Goede detailering en prachtige natuurlijke kleuren.

Hello Paula,
such a beautiful damselfly well captured in great sharpness and details. i like the net like wings that is so wonderful and the red stripes.
The curve of the grass is lovely too, and it gives an artistic composition.

Dat is lang geleden! Leuk om weer een foto van je te zien. Prachtige scherp gedetailleerde foto in mooie contrasterende kleuren. Prima compositie. Jammer dat het achterlijf niet helemaal scherp is en er een vuiltje in de foto zit. Schitterende vage achtergrond.

The detail and very bright colours you captured on this Vuurjuffer is really eye-catching and although the end piece of the lengthy body is not in focus the beautiful detail of the rest of this insect makes up for this tiny nit. I think it is a great macro, especially if one looks at the fine focus on the eyes and thorax. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
