Chacma Baboon
(Papio cynocephalus ursinus)

What type of animal?

Where does it live? Africa

What's it covered with? Fur

Natural habitat? Grassland

What does it eat? Meat & Plants

A monkey with attitude; these baboons are mainly ground dwellers; their home-territories include grasslands, semi-desert, rocky caves and seaside cliffs. They are "old world" monkeys. .

.Baboons always travel in strict formation with males leading, females and young in the centre and other males surrounding. If the troop is attacked, the dominant male alone, or backed up by the second in command, will advance and defend his troop..

.They are omnivores, and feed on a mixture of fruit, seeds, leaves and animals, such as lizards, birds and small mammals. Those living near the sea will also eat crabs, mussels and limpets. Our group, in Hippo River, like a few fresh green-lipped mussels too, from time to time..

.Baboons live in highly organised social groups of 20-50 animals. Higher ranking males actively reinforce their position, by force if necessary. Our troop is dominated by Nicholas and Matthew..

.Females develop a swollen bottom each month which can last a couple of weeks. It may be unattractive to us, but male baboons wouldn't agree as it is a way that female baboons attract a mate!
Auckland Zoo currently has a troop of five chacma baboons.

Above information are gather from here. You can also find more from here.

When I was in the Zoo that day with my little boy, we can't help to noticing this grumpy Baboon. He keep chasing other away from him, not sure why. I am lucky I don't have to go too near to take any photos of it, but still a bit worry that it might jump out. :P

Nice composition. I love baboons faces, they are so expresive.
Well done

Hey Sweety,

Well I think this is the same old boy that I posted the other day. He looked rather grumpy then too. I wonder what's bothering him :-) Nice shot.

Hi Sweety, you look nice and close to him, but it is a pity you didn't catch him with his head raised. I realise you are above him, but I'd like to have seen his eyes. He doesn't look a happy chappy does he? And very interesting notes too. Well done.

Hi Sweety!

Sweety, great composition, pose and pov.

I enjoy contrast and saturated colors. The fellow above really seems to be angry.

Hello Sweety, It's a good shot. The details on the baboon are great. I'm nor sure about the composition. I think this would be better in a portrait format with more space on front of the subject and less to the left - when I look at this I want to know what he is looking at and what his hands are doing (does that make sense?). Nice work and note.
