Laphria gibbosa

A hard one to identify but I believe this is a ’first-time’ on TN! It could be some other Laphria species and I would obviously be grateful for help on ID from an expert!!

We found it in the pine forest near our home where it had settled on a fence with its prey, a common beetle, Cteniopus sulphureus.

It is a very robust Robber Fly, 20-29 mm in length that is found in pine forests with dead wood, tree stumps, heather and small bushes. The female lays her eggs in crevices on old wood and tree stumps.

I’ve posted a top view of this ‘monster’ in the WORKSHOP.

This was taken from a distance of 1 metre with the camera handheld, it has been cropped and sharpened.

The Sw. name is ‘Stor Rovfluga’.

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Great moment in this photo. I guess this is a truly Nature way of living, someone has to die for others to live.
For sure Mr. Ivan can ID this Robber fly. He is an expert.
Saludos. And it so nice for me to be here again, after a short "Vacation"

Hi Ulla,

A fantastic Robberfly. You show it off with great style - never realized a fly was so intricate. Colors, details and textures are excellent. I have never seen an insect as well defined as this. Great Job.

Hello Ulla,
Heavens! what a "jumbo" robber fly! ... Your "laziness" is giving excellent results :) beacause you have been shooting very well this predatory action with the 100mm focal length!... I have also seen the WS and I have to say that the POV from above, has impressed me even more!
TFS, regards, Jesús

Love these shots of robbers with prey Ulla, it's a great catch..
Times two of course.
Quite different than the Giant Promachus robber I see here in Texas most of the time, I like its shaggy "tail" ;-)
Well done!

Hello Ulla
Just a great macro ! with excellent sharpness
kind regards

Hello Ulla!

This is really impressive specie of robber fly! I've never seen this one. Looks great. Nice to see it not in grass but on wood - all details are well visible, good moment during dinner, I also like frontal POV in workshop.

Dear Ulla,
I always considered your technical, photographic know-how very good, and now I find this image, which is REALLY PERFECT!

The multitude of details is actually incredible, have never seen before the bit of fluff at the anus of an insect!

Your Swedish, clean/clear air gives your image a truly crisp sharpness - and despite without a flash - even the victim is detailed and the colours luminous.

You even got the animal's eye contact, and I like very much the angle / view from slightly below.

I add this perfection to my favorites, thank you

Greetings from South Africa

Hello Ulla,
I missed this interesting shot and it's even a first! It seems to be a quite long Robber Fly and it has amazing white coloration for a Robber Fly. Hungry it was too! Poor little beetle. I have seen big ones like this too in Valais, but not sure that it is the same species.
Thanks a lot and kind regards

interesting capture, TFS Ori
