Laudakia stellio picea (Black Hardun, Orange Spotted Agama) [in Turk: Siyah Dikenli Keler, Portakal Lekeli Dikenli Keler]

A handsome male of black hardun while looking at me:) in the Antique Roman city Bosra (As Suwayda).

Here you can also notice a piece of skin shedding on the gular (neck) region. As in other vertebrates, the integument of reptiles serves as mechanical protection from the environment, shields the body from unwanted substances or toxins, and largely determines the nature and magnitude of mass and energy transfer between animals and their environment. The skin consists of a fibrous dermis overlain by an epidermis that has multiple layers of living or keratinized cells derived from an active germinative layer beneath. Thin layers of bone called osteoderms are deposited in the dermal layers of many lizards, turtles, and crocodilians. The outermost stratum corneum consists of highly organized layers of keratin derived from dead cells and is periodically shed, either as an entire unit (snakes, some lizards) or in flakes or pieces (turtles, crocodilians, lizards). Periodic replacement of older, keratinized, epidermal generations as a synchronous, wholebody ecdysis (sloughing or shedding) is especially characteristic of snakes.

TFL and Have a nice day!

Differentiation of L. s. picea is based mainly on its unique colour: males are typicaly jet black, often with yellow to orange (sometimes brownish) cross bars on the tail, sometimes with traces of yellow to orange spots on dorsum and toes. Females (and juvenilles) are black, with bright rounded yellow to orange spots on the head and body, those on body are arranged in rather irregular transverse rows. Intermediate colour forms occur in contact zone between L. s. stellio and L. s. picea (See my previous posts).

Hi Bayram!

The title also could be: "Hey, look at me, I'm the most beautiful!" Or it also could be: "When ugliness becomes beauty".

Your picture is superb, the impact on the viewer is very strong and the colours are so impressive. A pleasure to look at!

Kind regards

Hi Dayi. Humorous title, and very striking capture.
Perfect use of the harsh lighting in desert conditions, great looking Gurkuda you've got there.
I like the composition you've chosen, the details look very stunning too. A shot to be proud of.

Sevgili arkadaşım Bayram
I come to the conclusion, you were most of the time flat on the ground to get these wonderful shots!

It is actually quite amazing how many animals use ''look-outs'' in order to see what's going on. On our farm I often watched the female girafe climbing termite mounds to find her partner...

Your notes are again highly interesting. (I wish I could do it, would have less wrinkles.)

Living at present in a very dry area, I often find snake skins...

I notice, that the rock on which the Agama is resting, shows markings which could be from fossils?!?

Paylaşımın için çok teşekkürler
Have a nice evening

Vavvv..adeta bakışmışınız hocam. Çok güzel yakalamışsınız pozu.
Kompozisyon ve dikey çerçeveleme harika olmuş.

Hello Bayram,
Amazing this expression! These creatures have a talent as actors! This one I like especially with its arrogant mimic and the well composed shot you have done, taking the rock as diagonal for your picture. Most interesting!
Kind regards
