[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The baby Gambel's Quail are usually first seen in April. For some reason this year they were late and they arrived late June through the end of July. I have not seen any explanation for this but think it might have been due to the exceptionally cool May and June.

Quail are ground feeders and gather under bird feeders to dig for any seeds that might have fallen to the ground. The lucky family gets to the feeder first and do their best to defend their territory against families who come after them.

In this case there were three groups in the yard at the same time. The six parents fought over the space. Two sets of siblings took cover deep under the bushes but these little ones huddled on the brick steps so I was able to get a shot through the not too clean window.

In the end their parents returned to them and led them back to the feeder. The other two families took off and came back later.

Hello Jane,
I expect you feed them, hence you get so many visits from these beautiful birds? These lovely young ones look a bit neglected though!
A wonderful capture showing them all huddled together. Great details and beautiful natural colours in a fine composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

The look a bit bewildered Jane, there's safety in numbers applies here..
I think it's a great comp with all those opposing diagonal lines. They seem to be pointing to the huddled little ones here. Great details - well done! :)

Hello Jane,
Boy these little guys have really grown since Rosie and I last saw them. There is nothing cuter than the innocent features of the very young. Your image gives us just a glimpse into their lives from your patio view. TFS.

Hello Jane,
a nice cuddling group with good colours and sharpness. i like to see this moment of happiness and excitement. The soft colours of the background help to enhance the well patterned feathers.
Such a wonderful view as, our quail are hard to see and they real wild. The y hide very fast .
Nicely presented shot.
