SPADEFOOT (PELOBATES FUSCUS)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Pelobates fuscus is a species of toad in the family Pelobatidae, native to an area extending from Central Europe to Western Asia. It is commonly known as the Common Spadefoot, Garlic Toad, the Common Spadefoot Toad and the European Common Spadefoot.

The common spadefoot grows to a length of approximately 6.5 centimetres (2.6 in) for males and 8 centimetres (3.1 in) for females. The skin colouration varies depending upon habitat, gender and region, but is usually light-grey to beige-brown on the dorsal surface. The skin is mottled by darker marks that differ between individuals. The belly is white, sometimes with grey mottling. Albino specimens have been observed.

Two subspecies are traditionally recognised: Pelobates fuscus fuscus (from central Europe) and Pelobates fuscus insubricus (from N. Italy). In reality there is no physical or behavioural character allowing to distinguish these supposed subspecies. A recent study howed that there is no haplotype segregation for the populations of N. Italy, that, therefore, are not to be ascribed to a different subspecies. Haplotypes from some N. Italian valleys are very characteristic and support a different conception in terms of conservation: not for a different taxonomic position but, instead, for a peculiar differentiation. Populations from eastern Europe appear sufficiently different to warrant a possible species status (Pelobates vespertinus).

When alarmed, it emits a very loud call (alarm call) and it can exude a noxious secretion which bears a garlic odour, hence the common name "garlic toad".

Hallo Marius,
today we are neighbours; a superb and interesting capture of Pelobates fuscus taken from an excellent POV with outstanding sharpness and marvellous bright colours, very nice composition

Bonjour Marius,
Très beau cliché de Pelobates fuscus, espèce absente en Méditerranée. Dans le Sud-Est de l'Europe, il est relayé par Pelobates cultripes, difficile à observer.
Salutations

Hello Marius,
A great portrait of this Spadefoot. The lateral POV is excellent and taken to a high technical standard in fine lighting.
As this is a nocturnal species that keeps hidden during the day, you were lucky to find one and take such a shot!
This species is very rare in Sweden and I have yet to see one, so thanks for sharing this fine image,
Best regards,
Ivan

Marius
Excelenta captura ta de azi. Mai putin obisnuita pentru mina ca si subiect, insa calitatea ei este de apreciat.

Foarte misto poza, Marius!
Foarte bine realizata!

Bravo si merci de postare

Hello Marius,
This is a very fine shot of the golden-eyed and fine-colored Spadefoot. Amazing how beautiful these creatures can bee, if we look a little bit closer. A subtle background and an excellent sharpness and composition make this picture very artistical. Thanks also for the intersting note on the "Garlic-toad".
Kind regards
Anne

Hello Marius
That is an amasing closed up.Using the exposure at f/9 provided us with and excellent DOF.Sharpness is perfect and the detail are outstanding.

Hi Marius,
I have overlooked this Spadefoot. Yet this is a truly fantastic and rare portrait of a species we don't have in Switzerland. And its fascinating biology makes me wonder at the picture even more. The Spadefoot looks so fragile and yet it can dig like a soldier in war! Thanks a lot for this presentation.
Best regards, Dietrich

Una pequeña maravilla que la captaste de una manera muy profesional. Bien captadas las texturas y los colores, con un marcado volumen del batracio.
Una fotografía excelente.
Saludos Marius.
