Orthetrum trinacria

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Back to my bicycle trip in spring:
this picture shows (I believe) a freshly molted Long skimmer male, a species not presented before on TN (Odonata; Libellulidae; Orthetrum trinacria Selys 1841). I was on the Zhaku pass in Northern Iraq, Kurdistan province (see "Map"), when I felt I had to rest under a tree during the hottest part of the day. Instead of resting I started to chase a few unknown flying objects with my Lumix G-1. The road to Dahuk could wait!
ID: the black marks are not fully expressed but you guess the three longitudinal streaks on the abdomen as well as the sickle shaped mark on the pronotum. The species' distribution is disjunct and not well known, it stretches from Southern Europe and Northern Africa to the Middle East. It seems to occur in Southern Turkey and Cyprus.
Lit. : K. Dijkstra & R. Lewington, 2006.A Fileld Guide to Dragonflies of Britain and Europe. Bristish Wildlife Publ. Gillingham UK.
Post processing: after cropping I marked the animal body, reversed the marking and darkened the background. |

Hello Dietrich,
Congratulations on this dragonfly species first on TN!
Nicely captured with your compact, this female O. trinacria was taken with fine sharpness and natural colours against a suitable BG.
I trust you took a rest after you took this!
Thanks and have a good week,
Ivan

Hi Dietrich,
Very good pictures of this Dragonfly, TFS!
Hi Dietrich,
Also - vielen Dank für diesen seltenen Augenschmauss.
Liebe Grüße

Hi MF Dietrich, your perfect macro of this pretty dragonfly gived me an idea on my shots which i captured in Deir Azzor (East Syria) since i also captured a similar one in that region.
TFS this MF!
Have a nice night!
Cheers,
Bayram

Hello Dietrich,
This photo shows this species very nicely, with good detail and exposure. Good depth of field with everything in sharp focus.
