The field behind the house literally held hundreds of Clouded Sulfur and White Cabbage Butterflies this evening. What an amazing sight it was to stand there and watch them as they flitted from clover blossom to blossom. Others seemed to like chasing each other in small groups of up to four or five at a time.

I took the camera out just as the sun was setting and managed to get some close-up shots of this Clouded Sulfur, who had settled in for the night on some soybean leaves.

I thought this particular shot was interesting because it shows how bushy the heads of these pretty little butterflies actually are up close.

I am beginning to like photographing insects from late in the evening till after dark. They seem to sit still fairly well and allow you to get closer then they normally would in the day time. The only problem you have is finding them, because they are not moving around and are at times difficult to locate

Hi Ron,this is a very nicely detailed photo of the butterfly and the exposure is excellent looking as nowhere are there any overblown areas and the shadow details all look very good as well. The scales can been seen very well, in this tight crop as well as those tiny and fine fuzzy hairs ,that always make me think of pipe cleaners for some reason.Photoing insects as the day cools off or first thing in the morning is best as insects are sluggish in cool temperatures but as you have indicated tend to be hard to find. Thanks for sharing this bright and colourful little critter with us and those pink legs are fantastic too !

Details incredibly captured very well. tfs.

Amazing macro capture of this l'il pretty fellow. Depth of focus, light, contrast all of them wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Best wishes

Hi Ron,
A nice capture of this beautiful butterfly's closeup. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Ron,

Absolutely outstanding detail in this shot, the light brings it out nicely. The tight crop works for me too, lets you really see this butterfly's "face" nicely. Very nice color too, the red, green and yellow make for a pleasing image. A very minor quibble: I would have liked to see a bit more depth of field. With your full-frame camera, I wouldn't hesitate to close down to f/22 even. With some carefully-applied unsharp masking it should yield very sharp results even at that f/stop.

What lens was used for this? Is this a majorly cropped image to get the close-up?

Very nice extreme profile closeup Ron, fine details.
The dark green of the BG really helps to set-off your b-flies head here.
Great color and use of flash to fill.
Well done & have a nice weekend my friend!

Hi Ron,

Great use of your camera as a microscope! This is really close-up. It's amazing to see these details and textures which we rarely notice. The yellow, rust and green colors are wonderful against the excellent darker green background. After dark doesn't work for me - there's been a strange looking bobcat visiting lately.

WOW! Not at all like the Ron of old...simply lovely with cute and appropriate title. Wishing I could get that close and still see those whiskers clearly.

Excellent close, the detail and exposure are on the money. Nice work.
