White-fronted Bee-eater - Merops bullockoides – 22-24 cm - belongs to the Meropidae Family. There are 26 species worldwide, of which 19 are found in Africa; 9 off in SA. These are brilliantly coloured, aerial insectivores, usually found in flocks. Most breed colonially, sometimes co-operatively, in burrows that they excavated in steep sandbanks or roadside cuttings. The crimson & white throat, white forehead and lack of pointed tail projections are diagnostic. Juveniles resemble duller adults. Their habitat is the margins of slow flowing rivers with steep sandbanks, and other freshwater expanses. Just about 8 km north of Lower Sabi Rest camp in KNP, one can find one of these breeding colonies; at least, in most Septembers. We have encountered them elsewhere along the Sabi River during other seasons. The sandbank is in the bend of the river, about 7-8 m deep. We are parked on the top of the bank, maybe 5 m from the tree where the birds perch when they come in with their prey. They rest for a moment, check out whether the coast is clear, and then dive down the bank to their burrows. The perch was unfortunately “busy”, having many small twigs which interfered with clean BG and birds. I took around 100 photographs of these guys. I like the pyramid composition here. One can also see the birds in different poses.

Callie, I would echo Gerhard & say this qualifies as a masterpiece. What wonderfully colored birds these! The grouping of three with bugs to boot! An interesting & multi-faceted shot that ranks up there with one of your best. Very, very nice!!

Excelent capture, Gorgeous composition, fantastic colours and a good quality. Thanks for posting this one!

Three of a perfect pair....
What a superb shot, Callie, wonderful colours and they make the composition for you, that's very kind.

Yet another realy good one from you callie , the fussy twigs dont bother me too much they seem clear and sharp and part of the bird imeadiate surroundings.

Hello Callie - nice to have you back and with a tripple of course, you could not do with less. Lovely shot and composition - really. The shot is very clear and well exposed and what a great luck to get that close.

Everything what hopes to see to us in the next days with your but of 1000 photos Callie...
Spectacular image of this familiar lunch.
the colorful one of these birds is really beautiful and the composition with the bottom is superb. The only point in which I perhaps dissent, is in the left side of the picture, perhaps something wider of the necessary thing.
Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic capture Callie. They are handsome looking birds. It's very nice that the birds are looking in different directions and that two of them have prey. Good work.

Five great captures, 3 for you and two for the bee-eaters ;-)) Lovely, colourful critters, and I like the different poses. I can easily live with the busy perch with a catch like this ;-)
