The Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a migratory shorebird that breeds in the high Arctic tundra, then migrates during the northern winter to the lower southern hemisphere, including Australia. This particular race breeds in Siberia, the whole reproductive process from courtship to fledging their young, taking only 7-8 weeks.

Then they begin their 10,000 km flight back to sunny Australia, which is done in stages of around 3,000 – 4,000 km. Incredibly some of these birds live to 20 years of age, by which time they would have flown around half a million kilometres.

In contrast to their breeding habitat (hummocky tundra), their time in Australia (August - April) is spent entirely by the ocean, predominantly on rocky shores and reefs. Here they feed on a variety of small invertebrates that are found by flipping over small stones, shells, bits of detritus etc., hence the common name of turnstone.

I posted this shot simply to illustrate the birds in their Australian habitat, with the breaking surf in the background and a variety of molluscs in the foreground. These birds are juveniles, which don’t migrate back to Siberia until they’re three years old.

Taken at one of my favourite beaches, north Port Kembla, thanks for looking.

A great natural scene, Chris. Ruddy turnstones are so colorful with their bright orange legs. I really like that shot of them frolicking along the rocky shore. Somehow gives me a great sense of freedom. Am not sure why. Enjoyed your picture. Well done and TFS. : )

Very good picture, very good low angle shooting, the light was great.

Great shot and note Chris. Very good light, colors and details. I like the DOF that includes just enough of the OOF surf and rocks behind to add interest and balance the composition. Very well done!
