Polyommatus thersites (=Agrodiaetus thersites) (Chapman's Blue) [in Turk. Çokgözlü Menekşe Mavisi]

Today another “butterflies in love” shot and, I would like to dedicate this ‘love torrent’ shot to my beloved L’il Brother” on TN, Goldy RS (goldyrs).

TFL and Cheers,

Chapman's Blue (CB) is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 16-30 mm.

CB is very similar to Common blue, P. icarus but usually slightly smaller and it lacks the black cell spot found on the underside forewing of icarus. The male upperside is bright blue with a violet tinge, and there is a narrow, but strong and even, black border on both wings. The underside is very similar to icarus although the key identifier is the absence of a forewing cell spot (basal) which icarus nearly always has, even if sometimes very small. It is not always easy to see this as it is near the base of the wing, especially if the forewing is tucked down and the cell spot (or lack of it) is not visible. The hindwing underside marginal orange lunules tend to be brighter and more elongated with pointed ends, and the black “dashes” inside the white marginal areas tend to be more centrally located within these white areas, compared to icarus where they are usually close the orange, if not actually touching it. The underside ground colour is pale brown in the female and greyish in the first brood males, although second brood males seem usually to have a brownish ground colour.

It is found in Morocco, S. Europe, Turkey, Middle East, Iran, Caucasus, South Urals and Tian Shan. The adult butterflies start to emerge in April and are on the wing until the end of August in two generation (bivoltine: April-June and mid June-August). In Turkey, it is reported that show three generations (trivoltine) depending on local conditions (especially in high elevations) and flies to the end of September.

The larval host-plants are various species of Onobrychis species. Eggs laid on leaves. Larvae feeds on leaf cuticules, leaving major veins intact. In drier habitats, aestivation as an ovum or undeveloped larva is possibly required pending germination of larval-host plant seeds arising from spring flowering. Eggs of the second brood are laid on dried grass stems, in total absence of Larval-host plant. Hibernates as small larva. Larvae attended by some ant species (such as Lasius, Myrmica and Tapinoma species). CB observed in warm dry, rocky, bushy places; grassy clearings in schrubland; meadows and neglected cultivated areas from the sea level to 1500 m.

Hi little bro Bayram,

Good picture from the mating blue ones.
Not so sharp as always but enough details.
Nice composition and fine surrated colours.

Günaydin Bayram dostum!
A fine macro of a pair P. thersites in copulo. The saturated colours, composition on the attractive seeding plant and almost overall sharpness against a clean BG contribute to high quality image of this attractive species of Blue.
Thanks and have a great day MF,

Ottima composizione come sempre. TFS

Good morning Bayram, well I do not agree with Gert above, the image has actually great sharpness and detail, what is obvious however is the very shallow dept of field! Yes indeed in my opinion this image could be really a masterpiece if more appropriate aperture settings where used. Like f/13 or f/16 perhaps. As a small thumbnail the image looks superb, but when enlarged the missing focus at the eyes spoiling the idea. What a pity indeed, but hey the colors are good!

Merhaba MF Prof. Bayram,
wow...another exciting composition and exciting moement well captured. how lively to see the bright colours and pattern of the butterfly.
The dramtic shot is further enhanced by the shallow depth and lovely colours.
Well done.

Hocam nefis kompozisyon! Elinize sağlık:)
Bahadırın yorumu ve ona gelen yanıta baktım da birileri eğleniyor:)
Saygılar hocam.

My dearest friend Bayram
I am glad this is NOT Icarus! would hate to see these lovely wings burned... (just trying to show off my knowledge of Greek Mythology...:-)))

Goldy will be delighted with this loving couple: better than the Playboy Magazine ;-o and an original too!

It is amazing how the pattern of the two animals compliment each other - a new idea for fashion designers...

Thanks so much for showing your work on TrekNature and spoiling us with your knowledge.

Have a fun evening and week (nearly 45 C here)
sevgi dolu ve en iyi dileklerimle
Kendine iyi bak!

Hello Bayram,
another very beautiful image of butterfly in love. Perfect sharpness and background, fantastic light. Regards, Paolo

Merhabalar hocam,
Bakıyorum isimlendirdiğim yeni tür zoologlar arasında çabuk kabul görmüş.:) Tür adından sonra virgülle ayırıp ESER 2010 diye yazmanızı istersem umarım bencillik yapmış olmam:) Deskripsiyonunu ayrıca yapacağım. Selamlar,

Merhaba sevgili arkadaşim,
Excellent composition and saturated colours! I like the background with Daucus carota on the left. Tebrikler Bahadır! :)) Some people at Athens airport must be surprised to see me laughing with my laptop. Nice moment on my way back to the cold North...
iyi akşamlar,

Hello Bayram,
Beautiful photo of these butterflies and plant in lovely colours. Through the shallow DOF not all the parts are sharp, but that's no surprise anymore. I think you saw it by yourself. Good POV, BG colour and composition.

Hocam harika bir eşeleşme karesi. Arkadaşı da fena tongaya düşürmüşsünüz:) Yazışmaları okudum. Kıskıs güldüm... sizden de bu beklenirdi zaten. Emeklerinize sağlık. Saygılarımla,

Ciao Bayram, great serie of maiting butterflies, wonderful caterpillar with fantastic colors against a beautiful blurry BG, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Merhaba Bayram Hocam,
Yine çok güzel bir çiftleşme karesi.Netliğin kanatlara verilmesi hoş bir etki yaratmış.Dikkati üzerine çeken üst bölgeye bakıldığında iki kelebeğin kanadı sanki tek bir vücuda aitmiş gibi gibi duruyor.(Tek vücut olma deyimi burada tam anlamı ile vurgulanmış:)Canlı renkler, fon 4/4 lük olmuş.Selamlar, ellerine sağlık..

Merhaba Bayram
great shot of this loving couple, fine composed shot with beautiful colors and lovely details specially on the wings, very good brown BG
Have a good night

Hah..cok guzel.ellerine ve diline saglik canim kardesim..umurunda olmasin..Cok da guzel bakis acisi..fotoda bir canlilik var..seni yansitiyor adeta..Ellerine saglik.
Hepimizden selamlar.

I am stunned by this kind gesture!
Thank you so much!
A beautiful shot, Big Bro!
The colours are awesome and details good.
A big hug from India!

Class picture sir...!!! :-)

Dear little brother,
What a lovely terminology "love torrent", though the muted colors of the animals as well as the background make me think of autumn...

The gentleness of the colors give the whole picture a flair of "mature" love...

Like all your work, it is a great pleasure to view this image, and I add it to my theme "animals' sex life

Thanks for sharing, have a happy week
