[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There are a surprising number of hoverfly species and some can look very similar to each other, making positive identification something of a test even for experts. This one appears to be E. arbustorum.

The prominent 'hourglass' marking on the abdomen would tend to indicate that this is a male. The markings on the females may not be so distinct.

My image, here, of this hoverfly came from my archives. I took it slightly before I had my Nikon (*I think). I have several hoverflies in my collection but didn't post any until one day Argus let me know what they were. Thanks Ivan.

You can see my older work with DSLR's is much sharper than the Leica D-Lux. This is because one has to be 1/2 inch away from a subject for anything good resembling a macro and add a tripod on top of that. My Leica however is the best landscape camera on any market. Leica lends its glass to Panasonic with exception of the more superior glass which they reserve for their own logo'ed cameras.

Since I got a new Book on Swedish Hoverflies I have realised even more that there are subtle differences between the species, especially between those of the same genus.
This makes me uncertain about what species of Eristalis this is. One thing is clear, Bob: this is a sharp and well composed image with excellent natural colours and you kept it back for over three years!
Nice to see this and to know your memory is regaining its sharpness.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Merhaba Dostum Bob!

Hi Bob,

The flower is helping to frame the insect. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the hoverfly. The late morning light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.
