Erebia melampus

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
From the Moosalp (2'040 m a.s.l.) excursion again:
This is the only picture I have of this Lesser Mountain Ringlet (Lepidoptera; Satyridae; Erebia melampus Fuessli 1775; Kleiner Mohrenfalter). I found it on Arnica montana. For the sure ID it would be necessary to have the undersides as well. This butterfly could also be E. epiphron, but the latter species does not reach the altitude of 2'000 m. With a little help of my two friends that were with me on Moosalp (Anne, anel and Peter, batu) I might nail it down :-)
The Lesser Mountain Ringlet has a quite restricted distribution, it occurs only in the Central Alps. We can be pretty sure that the speciation had something to do with the past glaciation; the butterflies might have survived glaciation on Nunataks (= rocks and mountains protruding from he glacier shield). |

Lieber Dieter,
Anne
