Baby Mantid / Order Mantodea

Today's image of the baby Mantid I dedicate to our 1st grandchild, Nina (please see the workshop), a beautiful little girl who was born on the 21st October 2010. Alternatively you can also visit Loot's FaceBook album (Nina's Arrival) where you can see some more photos of Nina.

I am sure the most of you might have thought that my 1st upload after our vacation would be one of the many photographs I have taken in the Kruger National Park. Those holiday images I'll still share in the future, but this one of the baby mantid, I kept in the archives especially for this unique occasion. Nina is a precious little girl and a real blessing to all, but particularly for us, Loot and me, the grandparents. You can imagine how exceptionally special she is to us, as we even cut short our Kruger holiday after her birth to come and meet her personally. She is so sweet and peaceful, absolutely gorgeous and a real gift from God.

Many stunning images of mantids have featured in the gallery on numerous occasions by well known members. However, I cannot recall that I have seen a baby mantid featured in the gallery, unless it was done prior to me joining almost 3 years ago. These insects are easily recognised by their heavily spined prehensile fore legs, mobile and triangular head, and characteristic 'praying' posture. This specific little beauty was only ±8mm in length and the photograph was taken on the painted outer garage wall. I don't know what happened to its left front leg though.

For the rest of my notes I'll just give a short overview of the Order Mantodea in general.

Short overview
Mantids have extraordinary mobile heads, with large compound eyes set high on their upper corners. The first thoracic segment is elongate and bears characteristic, well developed, heavily spined fore legs, usually held folded below the head, as in prayer. Maybe this baby did not learn to pray as yet. The remaining legs are sometimes decorated with ornamental lobes, but are otherwise unmodified.

Wings, which are often reduced or absent in females and ground dwelling species, are folded over the elongate, 11-segmented abdomen. The relatively narrow tough fore wings are used mainly to cover and protect the broad, membranous hind wings.

All mantids are predatory, using their specially modified fore legs to ambush and grasp live prey. Eggs are laid in a frothy mass that hardens as it dries to form a characteristic egg-case (ootheca). Nymphs often differ in appearance from adults, some resembling ants during early developmental stages. So far 1800 species is known, of which 185 occur in South Africa.

Taken from: Field Guide to Insects of South Africa by Mike Picker, Charles Griffiths and Alan Weaving.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hola Anna

Felicidades a ambos...

Un saludo de Antonio

Hello Anna,
A fine macro of a mantid nymph taken with excellent sharpness and colours against a whitish neutral BG, though the dorsal POV shows one of the front legs is missing, perhaps hidden underneath the body.
Congratulations to you and Loot on becoming grandparents with the birth of Nina!
I hope she can grow up to enjoy the natural world as we have done. That is a wish for my two grand-daughters.
Thanks and kind regards,

Hello Anna,
This is a beautiful shot of this mantis and a beautiful dedication to Nina. You are so blessed and may she bring you happiness, joy and laughter. I'm looking forward to your other photo's of your KNP trip.

You won't believe this, but just as I pulled this up, a fly landed on my screen..right in front of the mantid..A good sign hey :)
Love the shot of Nina, open eyed and tuggin' on Grandpa's heartstrings right out of the gate.
VERY COOL. I was a grandfather again this year, his name is Austin..
Premature, and it was touch & go there for the first two weeks, but doing well now.
Thank you & congrats Anna!

Hello Anna,
Very cute little Mantis-baby. I think it's the first time we see such a tiny one. But as you mention it, it lost a leg, that's not a good start in life.
Pleasant surprise in the WS. You must be a very proud grand-mother! Congratulations!
Kind regards

Hola Anna.
Great Macro shot of this little Mantid, beautiful white BG and excellent note.

Congratulations for Your new grandchild Anna!
Me and My wife Lidia are going to be grandparents next April, and We are anxious to heve such a little boy in our hands and arms too.

Hi Anna,
great shot - looks really like a baby! Good details and the fact that the background is empty let us focus more on the subject.

Anna, first of all, congratulations to you and Loot on becoming proud grand parents! My wife Sonia and I experienced the same sensation 8 years ago when our first grand child was born on November 8. We are here in Delhi for celebrating his 8th birthday.
I looked at Nina in your workshop; she is an adorable baby with instinctive affinity for her grand dad, the way she is holding his finger. I'm sure Loot wouldn't mind dancing around her little finger; in fact, all grand parents do it willingly and I'm saying so on the basis of first-hand experience. :)
Thanks also for your warm words on my picture of Bird of Paradise flower which is endemic to your country. I was pottering around the garden to test my new camera and I chanced upon this single flower with a grasshopper on it.

Your macro of this cute little Mantid is excellent. I am aware the subject must be tiny, but you have got the minutest details on its body very clearly in this challenging shot.
Finally, it is always a pleasure to read your well composed notes.
Best regards,

Magnífico trabajo Anna. Valoro la rareza de esta especie,
pero es que además la posicionaste de manera excelente en el plano.
El fondo es muy adecuado, artísticamente y para el contraste.
Muy buen trabajo a mi entender.
Saludos: Josep Ignasi.

This is one cute little poser Anna. The whole body parts are in excellent sharpness and details. Well defined details against the clear background. A great find and well captured for TN.
Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend.
Kind regards - Jusni

Hello Anna!
Superb work. Good contrast and sharpness. Very good exposure and capture. Fine effect.
Well done!

A very nice macro of the wahlbergii nympth. Sometimes, if not most the time, mantids are canalbalistic and they will dine on their peers if nessesary. I have actually witnessed were an individual has eaten a part of it's own appendage. I have to say this is one of the nicer species of mantids not to mention the color variation. Congratulation Anna with your new granddaughter!

Hallo Anna,
a superb macro shot of this tiny Mantid, fine details, very beautiful contrast, simple and very nice composition, a graceful visual impact
Best regards

My dear friend,
This one is really tiny, and I wonder, how all the bits and pieces can fit into such a little head?!?
I have not made up my mind, how intelligent Mantids are and how much is just evolution/instinct?!?

Anyway, many thanks for posting your image to my group "Juveniles".

Has the animal a leg missing?

Thanks for sharing
Love Ingrid
