Behaviour
It is a resident bird of deciduous woods and parkland, with some old trees for nesting. It feeds on insects, seeds and nuts. Its old name “nut-hack” derives from its habit of wedging a nut in a crevice in a tree, and then hacking at it with its strong bill.

It has the ability, like other nuthatches, to climb down trees, unlike species such as woodpeckers which can only go upwards. It will come to bird feeding tables, and is then very aggressive, driving other species away.

The Eurasian Nuthatch is 14cm long and has the typical nuthatch big head, short tail and powerful bill and feet. It is blue-grey above, with a black eyestripe. Asian and north European birds (S. e. asiatica and S. e. europaea respectively) are white below except for chestnut in the vent area. The western European S. e. caesia has generally reddish underparts. Young birds are "washed out" versions of the adults.

Nests are in holes or crevices, lined with bark or grass. The size of the hole’s entrance may be reduced by the building of a neat mud wall. Five to eight eggs are laid, white speckled with red.

This is a noisy bird, often located by its repeated tui-tui-tui call.

A photo in very beautiful warm colours. The trunk, the Wood Nuthatch and the BG are all gorgeous. Fantastic sharpness and DOF. Wonderful composition with a very nice pose of the bird.

Excellent capture of a European Nuthatch. The head and shoulders are shown in a fine pose, from a POV that shows its features with excellent sharpness and colours. Good eye contact too.
I also like the composition with the lichen-covered branch.
Our subspecies in Scandinavia has white instead of orange..

You present us a superb bird picture. I particulalrly like the composition with the branch on the left embracing the bird. The repetition of the colour tones in the bird's feathers and the branch is marvellous. also appreciate the rich details and the fine lighting. Just magnificent!

Splendid image. It is indeed a feast to the eye and cannot go unnoticed. The way you captured it from so close-by is just great. It gives the feeling that one just want to reach out and stroke the plumage, especially the brown on the throat. Marvellous display of the detail of the eye, and the pencil shape beak. I very much like the light as well as the tree trunk in the image, as it all give extra oomph to the image as a whole. I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing.
