Banded Demoiselle (Caloptreyx splendens) and very splendid it is too in its clothing of metalic Blue`s with the dark band across the wings. this is a beast of clean faster flowing streams where on warm sunny days of may through to september the males can be seen fluttering with their weak almost butterfly flitting style of flight defending a stretch of stream / river from rivals perching on plants emerging from below the water where he hope to be able to get the female to lay her eggs after mating with him. When a piece of river becomes crowded then a lot of his time and energy will be spent trying to drive rivals off. iff there are too many males for the site then an alternative method may be used some males will perch on bank side foilaqge and ambush the female as they arrive to find a mate. The male in normal courtship will flutter round the female and keep landing on the plants where he would like her to lay the eggs. if she lands beside him he will fly up and land on her folded wings and walk down them till he is able to grasp her in the normal dragonfly fashion behind the head and form the mating wheel.they will then seperate and she will lay the resultant eggs (more details when I post her picture) .
The resultant nymphs will take 2years to grow before emerging back above water. My book tells me that this type of Demoiselle can be found across most of europe and a fair chunk of Asia, with some slight local variations acroos the hughe range, but is highly sensitive to pollution and lack of bank side vegitation.
This and several other were taken on a trip up into the north of nottinghamshire onto the sandstone area of the county (nearest large town Mansfield)on a little River called the Maun its no more than 15ft - 5m wide and 6-9inches / 150 225mm deep, very clear and loks fo reeds, and weed in the water and trees and willow herb, nettles etc growing along the bank so ideal for this species.

Another nice one Rob, well done. Excellent notes too.

Great macro with excellent colours and very good details. DOF is great and the background works good for the subject.

Rob, This is a superb shot. The colours, the detail (hairs on legs), diagonal. This is good work. The note too, very informative. WOW. Thanx for sharing.

This is one, fine specimen, like his pose, which makes the picture. As a small nit, the tip of the leaf he is sitting on would have been a nice touch to the overall impact here.

I never new these insects get this old, and now you tell me that the nymphs only get out the water at 2 yers old. Just shows you how much I know about this topic, but I'm learning fast here on TN. Very good DOF - there is not a spot on the subject that is out of focus.

Amazing shot, Robert. The sharpness and detail is spot on (look at those hairs emerging from the legs!) and the color setting is fabulous. Composition is also great with the demoiselle holding on to the bending grass. Great shot, accompanied by outstanding notes.

Excellent ! great colors and sharpness. This demoiselle is very elegant. Congratulations!

I unfortunalty don't have the camera to made such beautiful macros... Here, that Banded Demoiselle is very nice and the DoF perfect! Bravo!

tres jolie libellule pas du tout facile de photographier, belle capture en macro je presume, les couleurs sont bien rendues et le détail surprenant...bon job...amicalement BI

The first thing I like is the colours, what a wonderful blue against the green of the grass. It is very sharp and detailed and every part of the insect can be seen clearly. Really nice composition and close up shot.

A great macro shot.
Good colors and DOF, and amazing details.
Very good work.

This one too, nice to see it from this, you can see all the details perfectly, very well done !

Beautiful capture, nice and crisp against a nicely oof background. Good DOF, I agree with Callie about leaving the leaf tip in (if it's not too far off).

Very nice picture of this damselfly Robert. I think I spend most of last years summer chasing these ones - without succes of course.

I would prefer just a little more space in front of him. Apart from that I like the picture. It is very sharp and detailed and the colours are spot on.

Joli close-up. L'exposition de lumière juste et la netteté excellent, ce qui nous permet de bien voir les poils sur ses pattes. La composition est bien et le fond flou permet de bien séparer l'insecte du fond. Bravo.

Hi Robert,

Robert, This is an amazing Macro. Excellent lighting and clarity. The wings seem to be unusually heavy and big for a damselfly.
