Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus)
Swedish name: Fasan,

While driving on a small road between the fields we saw a group of Pheasants.
Among them we saw these two fine males competing for dominance.
This image was not cropped.

For the answer as to which one won this contest see the WORKSHOP.

This is the ring-necked form torquatus that shows a broad white ring round the neck. In this individual the ring is broader than usual. The form without the neck ring is known as colchicus

It is widespread in most of Europe where it has been introduced. It is a native of parts of Asia east of the Caspian Sea.

In Sweden this species was introduced in the middle of the C18th and earlier in most of Europe from parts of Asia. Most of the ones seen were released from breeding pens for game birds, but some succeed in breeding in the wild state.

Like all species of pheasant and partridge it is ground nesting and up to a dozen khaki-coloured eggs are laid.

This image was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 12 meters (40 ft). After size reduction and no cropping the image was selectively sharpened.

Dear Ivan

You had a lucky encounter and the good reflex to take advantage of this opportunity. These coloured spots in the autumnal meadow are superb. Moreover, you have captured a dramatic moment, well completed by the picture in the WS.

Kind regards

Hello Ivan,
Very beautiful photo of these pheasants. I did not know they succeeded in Europe in the wild. And never seen a photo of males, ony females.
Taken from a very good POV in excellent sharp details. The colours are beautifully contrasting against the surroundings. Good DOF.
Thanks for this beauty!

Hello Ivan,
wow..this is a real shot showing the action as well as the beauty. Excitement over the concentration by the males and the beauty of its colourful heads.
Very well shown with details and sharpness. You also have given a dramatic narrow depth.
As exciting as the birds, your shot too.

Hi Ivan,
I think you won, beautiful pheasants, captured well with good colors. tfs.

Both the Pheasants are looking fierce, going by the expression in their eyes, Ivan. BTW, is the difference in the colour of their eyes real or is it because of some play of the light?
A great snapshot in the most natural surroundings. The males of the species are apparently very handsome.
Thanks and regards.

Bonjour Ivan,
Le cadrage est, selon moi, un peu trop serré mais la valorisation des sujets est remarquable par la finesse des détails et la délicatesse des couleurs.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

Hello Ivan,

what an nice meeting with two Phesants.
Here they are hunting by hunters and from time to time I see one. Good low pov and sharpness.
Fine natural colours.

hello Ivan
very nice composition with great details and lovely colours
very nice shot
greeting lou

Unavoidably under the circumstances, the environment is a little cluttered Ivan, but the colourful beauty of the pair is evident even from this distance. Also a fine capture on behavior my friend, thanks indeed for sharing this pretty snapshot with us!

Hello Ivan,
These beautiful birds you took in natural environment very well. Blurred grass disturb a little but very hard to find better place in such time. Long time ago these birds were common in my countryside but increase of population of foxes was cause of disappearance almost completely of pheasants and partridges.
Regards, Pawel

Ciao Ivan, lovely couple with fantastic colors, nice scene, excellent sharpness, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Ivan
The title is a good introduction to this photo reportage. The notes together with the workshop image support well the main photo.

A pity that the Ring-necked Pheasants be the most popular game Birds for Hunters all over Europe and North America. Apparently many are bred in Asia/advertised and then introduced/released especially for hunting.

A colourful splash in this early winter Swedish Landscape.

Hello Ivan,
Nice action shot captured with great sharpnes, fine details, beautiful colours and excellent POV. Well done!

Nice scene Ivan, I've wished to come across one of these once upon a time

take care in the long dark winter

Hi Ivan,
Great capture.
Light,focus and details are fantastic.
Good composition.TFS

Hello Ivan.
You have managed a very good capture of these Pheasants ready to fight. The selective focusing was brilliantly executed as both of the birds are in the same plane. I like the details and pleasing natural colors against their habitat. The framing is close and pleasing. Great shot and thanks for sharing.

Hola Ivan

Preciosas faisan de colores muy llamativos y bellos, momento justo de la pelea por el dominio de las hembras. buena nitidez y perfecto POV.

Un saludo de Antonio

Like the two "facing" off this way Ivan, what striking colors they have..
Great behavioral display, Thanx for the WS.
Well done!

Hello Ivan,
A gorgeous pair of Ring-necked Pheasants. I haven't seen two cock birds together like this since I was a young boy. We used to have alot of them in the fields behind the house, but they have disappeared many years ago. Excellent detail and great exposure. Superb job!!

Hi Ivan.
You managed to catch a wonderful scene. It is great. I have seen these birds only once at real life. Simply amazing POV, superb framing of the scene, ultimate reproduction of colouration, other features of the species and (it is a key point) state of mood of the birds. DOF s precise. FG and BG are smoothed nicely. Bravo.

Hello Ivan,
compliments for the photo, excellent colors, great sharpness and excellent POV.
Very Very nice.
Thanks for sharing
hello Vanni

hello Ivan

excellent close-up shot of these male Pheasants (coqs),
excellent timing to shoot them on photo, the only thing Ivan
i see that you was with a fix lens 300mm maybe (if it was me)
i would go reverse (je serais allé vers l'arrière) to have on the image
all the bodys (with the long tails) of these wonderful birds, TFS

Bonjour Ivan!

Très belle cette photo! Bien cadrée, les couleurs bien gérées et la définition au niveau des bêtes est parfaite! Nice work!

Hi Ivan,
A very nice type,
very lucky.
habitatıyla a photo of a very successful

Hy Ivan
interesting to watch these two birds in their fight. Seem like a little "disturbed" that someone is turning to them, but judging from WAS, the competition continued.
And here pheasants are no longer quite so scared of people and tolerate relatively small distances.
All too nice low POV. Oof Parties were further processed in pp or the original result?

Helloi Ivan!
Fine pair, fine scene, excellent scenery. Nice lightness and natural colours. Good exposure. Very good contrast and sharpness.
Interesting information.
Well done!

Hej and Good Morning dostum Ivan,

A nice wildlife/action shot. Good timing and choice of fast shutter to freeze the action. The crop might be a bit too tight, but still a good shot.
I am living some TN connection problems in these days. So sorry for short comment:(
TFS and have a nice day!
