Chestnut/Black-Headed Munia
(Lonchura malacca) 黑头文鸟 Size:11cm

Unmistakable. MacKinnon & Phillipps call this species the Black-Headed Munia, Lonchura malacca. The Javan and Bali sub-species have partly white head and is treated by M&P (1993) as a full species, the Chestnut Munia, L. ferruginosa.
A shrill preeep.

Found in open country, mainly in the lowlands. In Kalimantan occurs also at lower mountain elevations; on Sulawesi to 800 m. Where its abundant, this munia will form dense flocks during the day, swerving across grasslands and paddy fields before settling to feed. At night, birds disperse to roost inside individual pouch nests.

Common resident breeder through the island.
