Hello Friends,
Today, 4 December 2010, I’m four years on TN. In these four years I’ve learned a lot thanks to you MF. But I still have to learn a lot. Therefore I’m almost every day here to look at your beauties and to give my critiques.
So THANKS FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP, CRITIQUES AND COMMENTS. And I hope to be here for a long time.

The Falcated Duck or Falcated Teal (Anas falcata), (in Dutch: Bronskopeend), is a Gadwall-sized dabbling duck.

Taxonomy
The closest relative of this species is the Gadwall, followed by the wigeons.

Distribution and Habitat
The Falcated duck breeds in eastern Asia. It nests in eastern Russia, in Khabarovsk, Primorskiy, Amur, Chita, Buryatia, Irkutsk, Tuva, eastern Krasnoyarsk, south central Sakha Sakhalin, extreme northeastern North Korea and northern China, in northeastern Inner Mongolia, and northern Heilongjiang, and in northern Japan, Hokkaidō, Aomori, and the Kuril Islands. It is widely recorded well outside its normal range, but the popularity of this beautiful duck in captivity clouds the origins of these extralimital birds.

This dabbling duck is strongly migratory and winters in much of Southeast Asia. In India: Uttar Pradesh, Bihār, Assam, eastern Haryāna. Also in northern Bangladesh, northern and central Myanmar, northern Laos to the Mekong River, northern Vietnam (from about Hanoi north), and China: Hainan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Guangxi Zhuang, Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, northern Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong, southern Hebei, Shanxi, northern Shaanxi. It is gregarious outside the breeding season and will then form large flocks.

This is a species of lowland wetlands, such as water meadows or lakes, and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing. It nests on the ground, near water and under the cover of taller vegetation. The clutch is 6–10 eggs.

Identification
This is a at 48–54cm length. The breeding male is unmistakable. Most of the body plumage is finely vermiculated grey, with the long sickle-shaped tertials, which give this species its name, hanging off its back. The large head is dark green with a white throat, and a dark green collar and bronzed crown). The vent region is patterned in yellow, black and white.

The female Falcated Duck is dark brown, with plumage much like a female wigeon. Its long grey bill is an aid to identification. The eclipse male is like the female, but darker on the back and head. In flight both sexes show a pale grey underwing. The blackish speculum is bordered with a white bar on its inner edge. Young birds are buffer than the female and have short tertials.

The male Falcated Duck has a clear low whistle, whereas the female has a gruff "quack".

Status
It has a conservation status of Near Threatened.

Hello Peter, and congratulations on your four year anniversary.
Just when you think you have seen every duck there is to see, someone brings up another one that you are not at all familiar with. This is the case with this particular bird that you have posted here.
The markings and colors are simply stunning. Excellent detail and wonderful exposure on this fine photo. Great work!!
Ron

Hi Peter,
I'm sorry I missed this one but I am not so regular in TN. But better late than never.
Congratulations on your four years at TN, it has been very nice to you around during these years, you have helped a lot with your great pictures and nice comments.
I hope you will be here for a long long time, mf
Best Regards
Gert

Hi Peter,

Like Gert, I also missed this image when posted, so first of all sorry! Congratulations for your first 4-year period on TN. :) I hope you'll be here for a long time - eventhough this is not your personal best pic by my opinion. Nice and colorful, with visual impact, great use of technique (even the photo seems slightly oversharpened) - but this is all, I don't feel the "wow" effect which came so often when browsing your gallery and clicked a pic. Even told on the last day of the year, on a celebration image, but I hope you can accept my personal opinion MF.

I wish you & your loved ones a very happy and prosperous new year, friendly regards, László

Peter, this is a very beautiful photo of this beautiful duck. Have a great day and thanks for your comments, Bill
