Satyrinae

Classification of Satyrs (also called "browns") is always complicated, but if it is classified in Venezuela, it is almost impossible! ... Here we have a great number of butterflies of this family, which are very similar between them. You can believe they are equal, but when you look at the details with care, they turn out to have subtle differences between them.

I believe this butterfly in my picture is belong the genus Cissia, and may be possibly a Cissia terrestris (Terrestris Satyr), but I am not sure!

Thanks by stop and visit!

Jesús

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
(unranked): Rhopalocera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae

About this Sub-family: Satyrinae, the satyrines or satyrids, commonly known as the Browns, is a subfamily of the Nymphalidae (brush-footed butterflies). They were formerly considered a distinct family, Satyridae. This group contains nearly half of the known diversity of brush-footed butterflies. It is estimated that the true number of the Satyrinae species may exceed 2,400.

They are generally weak fliers and often shun bright sunlight. The caterpillars feed chiefly on monocotyledonous plants such as palms, grasses and bamboos. The Morphinae are sometimes united with this group.

The taxonomy and systematics of the subfamily are under heavy revision. Much of the early pioneering work of L. D. Miller has helped significantly by creating some sort of order. Dyndirus (Capronnier, 1874) is a satyrid incertae sedis. Other than this genus, according to the latest studies on the classification of Nymphalidae all satyrines have been assigned to one of the 6 tribes, at least preliminarily.

Hello Jesús,
A very fine macro of the utmost quality!
I agree with you that this is a species of Cissia, but that is as certain as I can be as there are several species and ssp in this genus, all of which are very similar. Your suggestion that it could be terrestris may be correct.
Anyway it is nice to view this excellent image of this satyrid butterfly.
Thanks and have a nice weekend,
Ivan

Wow Jesus! An extreme close up here of this brown butterfly! Now.... who can beat this quality? Under the watchful eye of a specialist like Ivan(Argus) it is difficult to make mistake with the original name of the species! Great natural colors friend Jesus, good soft background and simple composition. In fact they are not much option for other arrangements in this tight frame! Have a lovely, peaceful weekend china!

George Veltchev
