Colias cesonia - STOLL 1790 - Southern Dogface

May be a butterfly mating is not exactly a good image for wishing Merry Christmas!, but they are butterflies! ... And they are my favorite insects for photos! .. . So with this photo I wish everyone in TN, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you very much to all for support and for sharing! ... I send a big warm hug for all my friend in TN!

Regarding the photo, I think is one of the most difficult macros I've made .... I saw them flying together (already copulating) and went into some bushes .... after watching the bushes for a time, I could determine this are perched on a low-level leaves near the ground. Then I crawled under the bushes, lying on the ground to get close enough to take pictures ... The butterflies flew and they went a little lower in the bushes, I crawl a little more ... and finally I did the photos .... When I wanted out of there, I realized I was totally immersed in bushes .... A very difficult macro, but very fun!

I've posted my first photo of this Pieridae a few days ago, thanks to Ivan (argus) I have the iD. This photo was taken at a site fur close to that first photo. It appears that this species occupies a specific area, because I have not been away from that place.

Thanks by stop and visit!

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Suborder: Ditrysia
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Pieridae (Duponchel, 1835)
Subfamily: Coliadinae
Genus: Colias
Species: C. cesonia

The Southern Dogface, Colias cesonia, is a American butterfly in the family Pieridae, subfamily Coliadinae (sometimes it is placed in the related genus Zerene instead of Colias).

The upper side of the pointed fore wings have a dogface pattern. The wings are mainly yellow with black borders. The under side of the wings is mostly yellow with a black eyespot on the fore wing and two white spots on the hind wing.

This butterfly can be found in short-grass prairie hills, open woodlands, and near road edges. Both male and female Southern Dogfaces may be seen feeding at flowers such as Alfalfa, Coreopsis sp., Houstonia sp., and Verbena sp.. Males are also fond of puddling. Its host plants include Lead Plant Amorpha canescens, False Indigo Amorpha fruticosa, Soy Bean Glycine max, Alfalfa Medicago sativa, Black Dalea Dalea frutescens, Purple Prairie Clover Dalea purpurea, and clover Trifolium sp.. Males patrol areas for females. The male is the active flight partner. The green-white eggs are laid on the underside of the host plant leaves. The larva is green with a white stripe running down each side of its body. The green chrysalis hangs up right with a silken girdle around itself.

About this family: The Pieridae are a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species, mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Most pierid butterflies are white, yellow or orange in coloration, often with black spots. The pigments that give the distinct colouring to these butterflies are derived from waste products in the body and are a characteristic of this family.

It is believed that the name "butterfly" originated from a member of this family — the Brimstone Gonepteryx rhamni — which was called the "butter-coloured fly" by early British naturalists.

The sexes usually differ, often in the pattern or number of the black markings.

The larvae (caterpillars) of a few of these species, such as Pieris brassicae and Pieris rapae, commonly seen in gardens, feed on brassicas, and are notorious agricultural pests.

Males of many species exhibit gregarious mud-puddling behavior when they may imbibe salts from moist soils.]

Identification: The Pieridae have the radial vein on the forewing with 3 or 4 branches and rarely with 5 branches. The fore legs are well developed in both sexes, unlike in the Nymphalidae, and the tarsal claws are bifid unlike in the Papilionidae.

Like the Papilionidae, Pieridae also have their pupae held at an angle by a silk girdle, but running at the first abdominal segment unlike the thoracic girdle seen in the Papilionidae.

* Dismorphiinae (6 genera) Mostly Neotropical, this group includes several mimetical species. The host plants are in the family Fabaceae.

* Pierinae (55 genera) Whites, Yellow, Orange-tips, many of these species are strongly migratory. Host plants are in the families Capparidaceae, Brassicaceae, Santalaceae, and Loranthaceae.

* Coliadinae (14 genera) Sulphurs or Yellows, many of these species are sexually dimorphic. Some, such as Colias, have wing patterns that are visible only under ultraviolet.

* Pseudopontiinae The sole species in this subfamily, Pseudopontia paradoxa, is endemic to West Africa.

** According to the molecular phylogenetic study of Braby et al. (2006), sister group relationships among Pieridae subfamilies are: ((Dismorphiinae+Pseudopontiinae)+(Coliadinae+Pierinae)).
