Cretzschmar’s Bunting female, Emberiza caesia

Swedish name: ’Rostsparv’, meaning ’rust sparrow’.

This bunting was named after Dr. Philipp Jacob Cretzschmar (1786 - 1843) who was a doctor and anatomist interested in birds.

After having spent the winter south of the Sahara, this species of bunting breeds in most parts of Greece, as well as S and W Turkey.
It arrives in April and leaves for its winter quarters in August.
As it is a rare vagrant to other parts of Europe, Lesvos is an ideal place to see this species that is widespread on the island.

It inhabits rocky areas at low altitudes where there are vegetation and low bushes.

The name ’rust sparrow’ or ’rusty bunting’ would be very suitable in English too as the female is quite camouflaged in her rust-coloured limestone nesting habitat.
The limestone has its rusty tones from the iron oxide content.
The male head and shoulders are grey. This can be seen in Christadoulos’ (Chrimakris) recently posted fine portrait.
I posted the male, her mate, last summer.

This was taken at a distance of about 10 meters with my camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Ciao Ivan, great example of camouflage, lovely bird in nice pose, splendid sharpness and fine details, very well done my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Ivan, beautiful bird caught in a truly perfect. Excellent sharpness and light on the details. All the best, Paul

Hello Ivan,
I wonder if it deliberately finds places where it would be camouflaged like here. Well seen and well isolated from its camouflage to present it as a bright and sharp image here.

Hi Ivan.
You managed to catch this beautiful bird at a very attractive moment. I like it’s a bit strained pose and glance. Rocks create a nice and natural for the species and its colouration scenery. Centered composition is disputable a little (very little :)) bit. My warm greetings and TFS.

Hallo Ivan,
a very beautiful capture of the Cretzschmar’s Bunting, very good sharpness, splendid colours, excellent POV and composition with a beautiful pose of the bird in a good camouflage on the rocks
Have a good weekend
Ciao Maurizio

Ciao Ivan. Very good contrast against the warm tones of brown. Great POV. Impressive focused eye.

First of all, many thanks for identifying the Blue Whistling Thrush for me, Ivan!
This cute Bunting does match with the BG in colour. Still, it stands apart crisp and clear against this background. The catchlight in its eye makes it a lovely image.
Best regards,

Hello Ivan,
Excellent capture with very good sharpness, excellent details and natural colours in its natural habitat. Well done!

Hi Ivan,
thanks for your beautiful photo. Perfect sharpness, and nice natural colours.
Have a nice rest of weekend,

Bonjour Ivan,

Fantastic capture of this extraordinarily beautiful little rust sparrow! Truly spectacular simple plumage! Great point of view, Ivan! The mono colored background is perfectly divided in two diagonal sections, one in focus and another in the distance behind!Fine natural colors and composition indeed. Thank you for sharing Ivan and have a nice evening!

Beautiful species, lovely coloration and no surprise that its almost camouflaged here, I liked the eyes of this bird which look so prominent. tfs.

hello Ivan

i love this distance and the size of the bird on the image,
it is in the same time closer and environmental shot,
very fine POV and the framing, beautiful warmer light,
great focus sharpness and details, beautiful catch-light
that render the photo more better, and if you had
shot the bird from more far and very small on the image
you would force to human eye to search this
camouflaged beauty on the image, TFS

Hello Ivan,

The bird gives a fine natural pose, and the catchlight however small is eye-catching!
The bird melts well in the surroundings, but the sharpness of details still makes it stand out very well...
Well framed with a fine 3D feeling!

Pablo -

This sweet little bird really demonstrates natural camouflage rather well Ivan, your bown & white "monochromatic" colour shot with excellent DOF management produced a fine composition to look at, TFS indeed my friend!

Ivan - A great capture with excellent sharpness and POV. I like the colors too. TFS

Hello Ivan,
very lively capture of this small guy in its surrounding. I could say that the camouflaging is excellent as the earth is of the same colour of its feathers.
Details are still intact and the lighting is very enhancing.
