Rainbow revanche for Gert

Dedicated to Gert "flirtatious fly" Ellstrom(ellis49), as a revanche to his earlier post of today.

Typical horsefly eyes which are very colourful. The evening light makes a rainbow out of the turquoise colour.

Not the best macro as it had lots of noise at high ISO 3200 (This was evening light without any flash), so I had to apply some noise reduction (NeatImage) resulting in some artifacts. Still, this is a 60mm macro lense and as you can see it is possible to get some detail out of insect eyes (if they happen to be large enough). Had to do quite a bit of PP too, as it was too dark and lightening made the noise come out more.

Horsefly Info:

Horseflies are classified in the phylum Arthropoda , class Insecta, order Diptera, family Tabanidae.

Horsefly is the common name for the large hairy flies of the family Tabanidae. Male horseflies feed on pollen and nectar, but the females suck blood as well and are common pests of animals and sometimes of humans. The bites of many species are very painful. The larger horseflies, e.g., the mourning horsefly and the 1-in. (2.5-cm) black horsefly, belong to the genus Tabanus ; the smaller and more common banded horseflies, with black, brown, or yellow bodies and brilliantly colored eyes, are members of the genus Chrysops.

Wauuuuu gabi
very nice photo
fantastic detail
well done :o)

Hi Gabi,
that's what I want to make one time in my life - such a beautiful sharp close-up shot.
I'm so jealous of this and want to say:
Congratulations, a perfect shot. Bye
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Very good macro, Gabi.
You manage great with your 60mm and don't need the MP-E 65.
The details are very good. Nice colours and POV too.
You did a great job.

Très belle photo, les yeuy sont vraiment spectaculaires, félécitations.

Henry

Even with the noise and the shallow DOF it's an impressive capture, it looks as if the fly is coming out through the screen ;-))

That is really close-up Gabi. Great colours in the eyes and very good dof. It is a little soft in focus and also I agree with Bente - there is a little noise - but who cares with such a capture;-).

Superb macro Gabi! So sharp and BIG! I've got these lens, but no way do I seem to get this sharp and close. More practice for me I think! This is an excellent job!

Oh my what big eyes he has!!!
Great rainbow effect.
Fantastic macro work, very sharp.
Nice tight composition.
:)

Good shot! You've captured this compound eye very well indeed. I particularly like the rainbow effect across it. The noise reduction is a bit too strong IMO, but at ISO3200 it's hard to get the balance right. Would you mind sending me the non-NeatImage version to play with? Not guaranteeing that I can do any better, but I think I should be able to... Anyway, a very nice capture - and a useful note too :-D

This is an amazing photograph! Flies are total alien looking creatures!

Superbe photo ! J'aurais bien voulu savoir à quelle distance tu te trouvais de cette mouche !

Gabi astonishing macro and excellent details and those eyes are really something to look at.
Ros

As you say, the ISO 3200 forces too much PP, but I must admit the detail is amazing. Worths very much seing, thanks for sharing.

Fantastic macro Gabi, pity about the noise. The rainbow effect is marvelous of course and details of the compound eye well revealed. I would give a little boast in contrast for this shot though. Very fine work.

Wow Gabi! I would have never thought this was possible if I had not seen it here with my own eyes...
Mind expanding shot! Quite impressive!
Thanks,
Dave

very interesting macro and well composed photo too. It is intriguing to see so many "eyes". I'm curious as to how far away were you from the subject and how you were able not to disturb it. well done.

Oooohh a very nice photo

This is the most amazing macro I've ever seen!

Hi Gabi,

That are not my favourite objects, but.......it's a superb photo. Quality in all his facets. Well done. TFS Bob

Now finaly we can see a good macro on this site. I read a lot about this Canon 60mm. Verry sorry because Nikon don't have an equivalent of it. 5:1 magnify and if you consider too 1,5:1 the ratio between Fx and Dx sensor dimension, you arrive at 7,5:1. It's fantastic.
Congratulations for the lens and for the photo.
Christian
