This is for Japie, who requested that I post something ugly for a change!. Now bird-wise, few can beat the Marabou stork for downright, slap-your-face ugly! However, certain vultures come a close second. Nobody can accuse this guy of being pretty, maybe pretty awful, yes. We have a couple of undertakers in the avian world, and the vulture ranks there amongst the top order in this group. Five of the nine SA vulture species occur in KNP. We were lucky to see all five on this trip, & even to get close enough for this mug-shot. The handsome guy in his Sunday’s best jacket is Mr Hooded Vulture - Necrosytyes monachus - 65-75 cm, one of the smallest of our vultures, & also the one with the smallest head. We call them Monnik Aasvoël, meaning Monk Carrion Bird. This is a small, brown vulture with down, not feathers, on the head & neck. The naked face skin in pink/red/white, depending on the age of the bird. It has a blue eye-ring. It is an uncommon resident, but I think we saw all the birds in SA on this day. They were obliging with fly-in landings as well. Well Japie, this should set you right, no more reason for being jealous, there are also ugly mugs in the animal world LOL.
See the WS for the full bird.

La photo est belle et de bonne qualité. L'oiseau est étonnant mais c'est pas un playboy ;-) La note est, comme toujours, instructive.
Well done !

He looks like a seventies pimp, with his fur jacket. These are for sure your signature shots Callie. Lovely detail and colours. Today is one of those days when the posts are so good I feel like it's my 1st post here on TN. Brilliant, Masterpiece.

pour etre moche il est moche ! on dirait qu'il vient de faire un duel et qu'il y a laissé des plumes :D
en tous cas la photo est bien prise.
thanks for posting this ugly bird ;)

Very ugly but very good Callie.
Good sharpness with good detials and very nice colours.

Very well done.
BTW ,The biggest chocolate factory in Sweden is named Marabou

He is quite Callie,
You said ugly, no why, You have never see my head, fun. Erg goede compositie, met geweldige kleuren, scherpte en dof, geweldig werk.

Ugly, for sure, but I love the eye make-up. How's his wife? This is a real change, Callie. I'm not jealous of this one, but of the beautiful wildlife you can see in S.A. and the way you share this with us. Thanks

Yep, this one is ugly to be sure Callie. Very good as usual, although I wonder if it might be just a little overexposed, or at least wouldn't be hurt with a little lower exposure. Good shot.

Did you get a new lens?

Yeah, he's ugly...but he's an honest bird...the others hide their ugliness with feathers :-). Good shot Callie, I really like Gerhard's take on it. As for the exposure, I agree with Darren, but it's still very good.

May be ugly in the ground, but in the air it must be magnificent. Very beautiful photo, you can really feel this bird through this shot.

My magtig, callie, hoekom laat jy die voel so skrik!!!!? Very nice Callie. I like the dour look on his face - ook met niks tevrede nie.

Very ugly and ... beautiful.
Composition and sharpness are spot on.
I would have increase saturation colours, but it's still really nice.

You sure know how to pick-em' Callie! Sometimes I wonder about your facination with the "Uglies"!! It's a good head-shot..and I like head-shots! A bit over as stated. Your bright background carried-over a tad into your subject..Probabably because your shooting such a "bone-head"!! ;-))

I believe that it must now be the ugly bird but of the published ones until Callie.
But the quality of the image is fantastic... like workshop.
Great sharpness with colorful totally natural and perfect DOF.
An ugly plenty of beauty.
