Red Crested Korhaan / Lophotis ruficrista

The Red Crested Korhaan is number 40 in the series of the birds of the Kruger National Park which I am still sharing. Enjoy!

The majority of the times when we hear these birds calling, we would slow down and stop. Even though we normally travel very slow one can easily miss these birds due to their excellent camouflaging. Usually we will find it standing dead still under a bush, seemingly thinking that we did not see it. It has a very loud voice and it is quite comical to listen to it and watch its movements when it is performing a call.

Identification and behaviour
The red crest is rarely visible except on displaying males, when the elongated, rufous feathers are raised to form a crest resembling that of the Grey Crowned Crane. Both sexes have a black belly. In courtship display, the male flies straight up in the air, then suddenly tumbles and plummets towards the ground before gliding off and settling. This is quite a spectacular exhibit to witness.

Distribution and habitat
Near-endemic to southern Africa, occurring from southern Angola and Zambia to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, Northern Cape and north-eastern South Africa. It is the most woodland-dependent of the bustards and korhaans.

It is omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, especially termites, beetles and grasshoppers, plant matter, and seeds and fruit, foraging on the ground, picking up food items with its bill. The following food items have been recorded in its diet: Termites, beetles, crickets, locusts, grasshoppers, bugs, ants, centipedes, spiders, moths and butterflies.

Egg-laying season is from September-April, peaking during October-February. The male puts on a spectacular courtship display to multiple females, some of which he will mate with. The female will solely incubate the eggs and raise the chicks. It lays 1-2 eggs directly on the ground, often among dense leaf-litter, which are incubated solely by the female, for about 22 days, and little is known about the chicks, except that they fledge at roughly six weeks old.

Hello Anna, a beautiful capture of this strange bird, very nice details and beautiful light. All the best, Paul

Hi Anna,

excellent composition and details -the plumage of this species is apt to mimicry in the surroundings, therefore it's difficult to make stand out so well its details if found in its natural habitat- with the figure well emerging from the background.Excellent eye contact. You allow me to enrich your note with the Italian name of this species: otarda dalla cresta rossa.

Have an Happy Easter.

Merhaba Anna!

Baie geluk my vriendin dit is pragtig net soos jy. Mag hierdie Paasfees vir jou net 'n seen wees.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it. -you said

and it is so very true Anna. No man nor matter can detract from that which you enjoy, yet passing that joy and knowledge along to others completes the circles of friendship and the hobby of photography so well. As seen in your excellent image. It is most certainly enjoyed by me!

Hello Anna,
A very fine capture of this species of korhaan. The pose is great and taken from a nice POV with fine sharpness and natural colours in a natural environment and Bg that makes it look camouflaged but the clarity of this shot allows it to be well seen.
You did well to come so close to a species that belond to a shy group of birds that is difficult to approach.
Thanks and kind regards,

Ciao Anna. Perfect sharp details and impressive focused eye. Great work in not so easy light's conditions.

Hello Anna,
Exceptional shot of this very attractive and camouflaged bird. If I hadn't read your notes I would have certainly wondered why it is called a Red Creested Korhaan. I can definitely see how you could easily miss spotting one of these guys while traveling in a vehicle.
You managed to capture superb detail and the exposure is right on the money. Wonderful composition and shown in a fine pose. Well done!!
