Natal Francolin / Pternistes natalensis

The Natal Francolin is number 42 in the series of the birds of the Kruger National Park which I am still sharing. It is also known as the Natal Spurfowl. Enjoy!

These are one of the birds in the Kruger Park that one can hear from far away, sometimes its call can be very irritating as it actually have a sound like a wheelbarrow that needs oil. It is a raucous, unmusical screeching. They are busy-bodies, but sometimes one is lucky and they come close and actually stand still for a second or two, and that is when you use the opportunity to photograph them.

Within its range it is the only spurfowl without bare skin around the eyes and on the throat. The Cape spurfowl also lacks these features but the ranges don't overlap and in addition it has a scaly-patterned lower breast without the streaks found in Cape spurfowl. Plumage of male and female is similar. The male is heavier (average weight 500g versus 390g in female) and has much longer leg spurs than the female.

Distribution and habitat
Occurs in eastern regions of South Africa, in eastern Botswana, all over Zimbabwe, northern Mozambique and outside of southern Africa. It is also found in southern Zambia. Found in savanna, woodland and coastal forest.

Mainly eats plants in winter, supplemented with insects in summer, doing most of its foraging in the early morning and late afternoon. It often scratches through animal dung in search of undigested seeds. The following food items have been recorded in its diet: Plants, small bulbs, roots, seeds, fruit, fallen grains, sorghum, maize, beetles, termites, grasshoppers and caterpillars.

The nest is a scrape in the ground, lined with grass stems and sometimes feathers, hidden in scrubby vegetation. Breeding season in South Africa is between December and May. After laying 2-7 eggs, the female incubates them for 20-25 days before they hatch. Chicks can fly short distances after 10-14 days.

Hello Anna,
Even though Frankolins are shy birds you managed a fine super sharp capture of the Natal Francolin in an opportunity that you used well. The grit road made a fine Bg and the POV shows its features very clearly with good natural colours to make this and excellent portrait of this species.
Thanks and kind regards,

Hello Anna
A very interesting photo of this Francolin du Natal, I species I have never seen so far.I am impressed by the size of the spur. Details are very sharp except for the hind leg, maybe 1/125sec was not fast enough to freeze the movement. Good colors and depth of field. I would have like to see it from a lower point of view though.

Hello Anna,
This guy reminds me of a really, really plump quail. Other then the orange coloring on the legs and beak, I would imagine they would be a real challenge just spotting one in the brush.
They have spurs like a turkey, how interesting? The plumage is patterened to make them invisible to any predator. Their short, but stout legs suites them fine for scratching in the dirt.
Your notes do not mention this, but it resembles a game bird so I have to wonder, are they eaten by the locals?

Hello Anna,as well as capturing all the lovely detail in the plumage you have the movement of the leg,a very impressive shot.
Best regards Les.

Hello Anna,

A fine capture of this lovely bird!
I like how the moment is captured, as the speckled fellow is striding along, I notice even a slight motion blur in the right foot...
The subject is well framed with plenty space to move into, excellent colours & details in the plumage!
