Paphos Blue

Glaucopsyche paphos is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 20-30 mm in the family Lycaenidae
It is an endemic species of Cyprus. It is similar to the species Glaucopsyche melanops (Boisduval 1828)

The upperside ground colour of the male is a bright blue with a thin black band along the outer margin. The underside ground colour is grey-brown with a series of black spots in the postdiscal area. The upperside ground colour of the female is dark brown, almost black. The underside ground colour is dark grey-brown. The markings are similar to those of the male.

The adult butterflies start to emerge in February in coastal areas and progressively, until May, on the highest peaks of Troodos. They are on the wing until May in lowland areas and until the beginning of July in mountain areas. It only produces one brood and overwinters as a pupa.
The larval host-plants are Genista sphacelata sphacelata, Genista sphacelata crudelis and Calycotome villosa (Hairy Thorny Broom) of the Leguminosae family. Genista sphacelata ssp. crudelis is an endemic subspecies and is restricted to higher peaks of the Troodos massif. The other two host-plants are thorny bushes that are widely distributed throughout the island, apart from some areas of eastern Cyprus.
It is a very common butterfly distributed mainly in the southern, western and northern areas of Cyprus, from sea level to the highest peaks of the Troodos massif. Unrecorded only in the Mesaoria plain and some areas in the Larnaka district, where its host-plants are not found. Main habitat is maquis, garigue, phrygana and forested areas where its host-plants grow. Such habitats are very common in the Troodos and Pentadaktylos ranges, coastal areas and intermediate elevations of Lemesos and Pafos districts.

Hello Christodoulos,
A very cute endemic species of Cyprus which looks quite alike our continental Glaucopsyche-species. Very powerful shot of this tiny creature, well shown in a lateral view in front of a blurred green background. Pleasant also the way it is posed on the little rounded leaf.
Thanks and kind regards
