With the red, curved rear point, which has much gone of the sting of a scorpion, the male holds the female fixed during the paring. To infer the female, he gives her a drop saliva firstly. Generally the scorpions flies hide themselves on the shade side of a hedge or a small wood. They do not love apparently direct sunshine. They feed there self mainly with dead insects, which they obtain sometimes from a spider web. The female has a sharp rear. The larvae are a kind of caterpillars and are 15 mm large.

This one I took last sunday. It was funnie. This scorpion fly was eating from a spider web, and sitting in that web, so it look likes it is flying through space. when i saw the photo I must think on star-trek.
I hope you like the shot too.

Belle image Jaap, J'aime la composition et le rendu des couleurs. Bravo

A good example of a levitating insect, rare these days :-).
Well, this is an amazing shot, because, by the legs, you see it's not flying, but still, it looks like flying. The strange shape of these scorpion flies adds to the mystery conveyed with this shot. Very good catch, Jaap!

Incredible photo for this flying scorpion. Sharpness is good for an action shot. 1/90 I can't believe ;-) I like the colors of the blurred background. Congratulations Jaap and TFS.

Nice shot Jaap, good macro, I like the details, sharpness and intestring POV. Good work! Thanks for sharing

Great macro, Jaap.
It's nice to see a scorpion fly, I have not seen non this year, last year I saw a lot of them.
Very good action. nice colour and good details.
Excellent work.

This is such an impressive shot, I like scorpionflies so much. They are looking so dangerous. It's great to see it "standing" in the air. You made a marvelous shot, thanks for sharing it with us,

Jaap, really nice. Before reading your note, I thought to myself: "How could he 'freeze' the action by using only 1/90?".

A really great shot.

Excellent colors, pov and composition. I like colors too. Since we cannot see the web, I'd say this is a great effect too.

Congratulations.

Hahaha, you caught me Jaap! I really thought he was flying until I read your note. :) Funny! The DOF is too shallow, but the colors are very good. Composition and POV are also very nice. Well done & TFS!

Strange looking creature, and I like the standing on air bit... Colours and details are good, smoothness is good, though maybe a hint of pixellation.

Dag Jaap,
Opnieuw deze prachtige macro en zo scherp, wat is onze natuur voor mij veel veranderd na het zien van uw mooie foto's.
Groot werk hier Jaap.
Mijn complimenten,
John.

Without reading your note, it looks like a flying insect. It's very unusual to see an insect like this intentionally go into a spider web! Well, I've never seen it before! DOF is obviously quite shallow, but necessary, I assume to remove the web from the FOV. Main thing is you got the head in focus.
Well done.

Hi Jaap,
This is a very special shot of a "Panorpa communis".
I like to see the details in the very special head of this insect : the point of view is well chosen.
It really seems to fly so your effect is successful !
Congratulations and thank you for the intersecting note.

Floating scorpion fly ;-) Excellent capture Jaap! Really well spotted. I saw this insect on spiders webs also - they easily flew away from it. POV is good, same as colours, and subject very interesting.

Ah ha, nearly fooled me. Still its a great shot Jaap. Excellent sharpness of this curious insect. Great POV and DOF, well done.

This is amazing Jaap!
Looks as if the insect've been captured in flight. You have really nice details here and perfect POV and composition.
Overall, great shot.
I like it very much.
WELL DONE & TFS

This is an interesting shot, Jaap. Lovely POV and sharp where it counts. Maybe a tad oversharp.. :) It does look like it is flying though. Well done.

Excellent shot Jaap, a very short DOF makes this picture very pleasant. The sharpen is also very good, so is the lighting

Hi Jaap, excellent sharp macro photo, the composition is very good, glad to add to 100 points, Juan

DOF a little shallow. Very good composition. Brilliant colors
and interest: DubbleMegaMaxi++++
I'm very curious now:
Does he know the trick used by spider to walk without beeing glued on the web? Is he that stong that he can break the web and escape any time a spider would charge? Are the spiders afraid to charge him?

Hi Jaap, TN is so big now, we miss wonderful shots like this UFO scorpion fly. If you did not explain I would think is floating on the air. Most interesting this one manages to sit in a spider web, without falling in its sticky texture :)
The DOF is a wee short but the details are very good. TFS.

hi jaap
je n'avais pas encore vu ce superbe cliché de mouche scorpion femellr en vol,la netteté est assez bonne malgrès le mouvement de l'insecte.le BG est bien fait.

The magic thing with the personal galerie is that older pics are popping up from time to time, so I came to discover this splendid shot you managed to capture a year ago. The scorpion flies being already very shy I only appreciate more that you managed this perfectly sharp "flying-feeding" shot of this chimera. Thanks for showing, Patrick
