The Least Tern

This is one of the smallest terns found along the eastern coasts of North America. It is breeding time and the adults are busy hunting for fish.

There is a colony of Least Terns nesting at the beach at the West Meadow Wetland Reserve close to Stony Brook. The birds are nesting on the ground and although there are signs indicating this at the beach, some people aren't paying heed at all. I was at the beach yesterday which was full of people and I saw people walk right through the patch where the terns were nesting. There are also a few Piping Plovers nesting here, which are very rare birds and these too are trying to raise chicks on the beach, nesting the same way as the terns.

Hoping that people will respect the wildlife and not put too much stress on it.

Technically, to get this shot was quite a challenge with the Tamron lens. I used manual focus while tracking these fast moving birds. Most shots came off out of focus, but a couple have come reasonably sharp.
