Flower Crab Spider, Misumena vatia

Swedish name: Blomkrabbspindel, meaning the same as the English.

This species of Crab Spider is common in most of Europe.

It has the ability to change its colour according to the flower it has chosen to wait in. This colour change is to yellow or pink and it takes several days. The eyes register the colour of the flower and the body then makes the necessary colour chemical.

However instead of being camouflaged in a flower it can also pretend to be a flower by remaining on a stalk in this way. Here it is ready to catch a visiting insect that has been fooled into taking it for a flower.

The colour depends on the surrounding flower colours.

This was taken with my camera on a cheap tripod at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6ft).
After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW.

Hello Ivan,

A very delicate image, but I know my sister-in-law would get the creeps by the sight, with her arachnophobia!
The little creature comes out nicely, good details and well
separated from the back...
An interesting pose actually, with two legs grabbing the straw and the other two in mid air..!

Pablo -

I would have thought it was a Crab spider, but you are the authority on these matters, Ivan.
The Flower Spider in this picture has its four front legs stretched out like a gymnast doing the balancing act.
It is a remarkably sharp and crisp macro shot with the camera mounted on the tripod.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ivan,
Very unusual for me, and very beautiful. Once again no shortage of DOF and excellently well presented in great quality. Best regards.

Hallo Ivan
This crab spider looks like a trapeze artist doing a headstand. An impressive macro with fine details that is well seen. The rubbery texture of the paws is well seen against the neutral green backdrop. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Bonjour Ivan,
Une image bien intéressante que j'ai manquée. Très belle présentation presque monochrome de cette créature bien intéressante. La netteté aussi est au top. Un posting très plaisant.
Bon dimanche

Hello Ivan,
A perfect capture of this particular Crab Spider which has the unique ability to change colors depending on the type of flower it sits on.
There is just something about Crab Spiders that make them seem less menacing then other spiders. I suppose it is due to their body features which makes them resemble a crab.
Superb focus and beautiful natural coloration achieved, along with just the right exposure. Super work!!
