Lycaena phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1761) feeding on Eryngium creticum
Small Copper

Lycaena phlaeas is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 23-30 mm in the family Lycaenidae. The upperside basal ground colour is a bright copper orange on the forewing and dark brown on the hindwing. The forewing has a brown border along the outer margin and scattered black markings. On the hindwing there is a copper coloured submarginal band.. The underside of the forewing has a deep orange colour with a light brown outline and scattered black marks. The hindwing ground colour is light brown with a thin orange line in the submarginal area and scattered black marks. Male and female are similar.

Lycaena phlaeas has a range that extends over the entire northern hemisphere and includes Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia to Japan and North America.
The larval host-plants are various Rumex species.

In Cyprus is a very common and widespread butterfly which inhabits a wide variety of habitat. Observed in forests, maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land and river valleys, from sea level to the summit of mountains. Despite its wide distribution, it is rarely numerous; usually only one or two specimens will be found in each locality. In the spring it is common along farm and forest roads, where its preferred host-plant Rumex cyprius thrives.
The adult butterflies begin to emerge in February and are on the wing until November in at least four broods. In some years it is observed earlier (January) and may still be on the wing until the beginning of December.
During springtime in Cyprus it has been observed ovipositing mainly on the very common Rumex cyprius. In summer it has also been observed using Rumex cristatus.
