Fabriciana niobe f. eris (Meigen, 1829)
Fabriciana niobe (Linnaeus, 1758)

Niobe fritillary, Mittlerer Perlmutterfalter, Duinparelmoervlinder, Klitperlemorsommerfugl, Väike-pärlmuttertäpik, Rinnehopeatäplä, Chiffre Niobe,

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae

Wing span: 45 – 50 mm

Wide spread in Europe and temperate Asia, Fabiciana niobe may not always be common but still quite regularly be seen in uncultivated open areas near forest borders. In the southern parts of the European continent, the species seems to prefer rather dry and warm habitats. In the lowlands of Austria it may be seen flying from the end of May into July in one generation.

Niobe would also go up into the mountains to approximately 2000m above sealevel, and up North to 62° in Scandinavia.

Like with many other species of European fritillaries, Niobe caterpillars would feed on various species of Viola.

Due to the decrease of uncultivated areas in the agroindustrially dominated parts of Europe, Niobe is becoming rare, and considered to be severely endangered in many parts of Central Europe.

Like many others of its subfamily, Niobe is showing mother-of-pearl spots on the underside of hindwings. But there is a variation that is showing pale yellow spots without any silvery iridescence instead – as shown here. According to my observations, this variation called “eris (Meigen, 1829)” is more common in the southern parts of Europe than the variation with silver spots.

Rain clowds were arriving that afternoon in June when I took the picture - peferably good weather conditions to take pictures of butterflies peacefully at rest with the sky as a canvas in the background.

Hello Peter,
Really great to see such a fine shot of the eris form of niobe!
You must have been lying down to take this on white clover, and doing it without scaring the butterfly! This in itself is an achievment, but you have also managed a sharp shot with well controlled use of flash to provide natural colours against a fine clear sky.
A fine one from your archives that is a joy to view!
Thank you and have a great summer,
Ivan

simple and very beautiful, TFS Ori

Hi Peter.
Blameless and charming butterfly picture from you as usual. Great low POV, amazing square composition, lovely flowers and insect at whole. I welcome superb flash work, precise details of the entire subject and nice colours of the scene including delicate coloration of the sky. Eye of the butterfly is simply sweet too. Bravo. Well done.

P.S. Many thanks for heartfelt congratulations. I am very touched.

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter,
as said simplicity is the best. I like this view shot in excellent simplicity.
the strength is in its simple composition supported by the well defined colors, sharpness and angle of view. The soft blue sky works wonderfully here.

Lieber Peter,
