Sunrise / Seascape

Today I celebrate my 150th posting, and I would like to share this beautiful sunrise over the sea at Port Shepstone as part of the celebration.

Loot and I had a wonderful long weekend, taking some time to rest and to get away from the daily rat-race, just travelling to all the little South-coast towns and enjoying nature. We had such a great time, being able to appreciate nature, being able to photograph some beautiful land and seascapes, and even visited a snake park, a crocodile park, and a butterfly house. Unfortunately Loot was admitted to hospital with Cellulitis on our return, but thankfully he is now on the road to recovery.

This awesome sunrise was taken over the sea at Port Shepstone on our way back home to Empangeni, and I hope you enjoyed looking at this breath-taking scenery as much as I took pleasure in taking it. Thank you for each and everyone whom has visited my gallery and appreciated my photos.

The colours of the sky are created because the atmosphere between the sun and the earth consists of many different particles and chemicals. The sky directly surrounding the earth though, mainly consists of nitrogen and oxygen molecules as well as the dust and debris kicked up by humans and animals on the earth's surface. So, when the light hits these particles it is broken up and the different wavelengths are scattered in different directions. This process is called scattering. With our atmosphere the sky surrounding the earth would be black and only lit up by the white light of the sun. But instead we have an atmosphere that provides us with the colours we can enjoy.

During the day the sky is seen as blue unless clouds are in the way or the weather is not nice. But why is it that the sky is blue instead of purple or orange? The answer to this question is that the wavelength of blue light is very small and can be broken up about ten times more than red light because red light has almost double the wavelength of blue light. So, blue light is scattered in more directions than the shorter wavelengths when it comes in contact with the nitrogen and oxygen molecules. Therefore, blue is the light that enters our eye. But, using this same scientific reasoning, it would seem logical that we would see a violet sky instead since it has the longest wavelength of all. But, human eyes are more sensitive to blue than violet so therefore we see a blue sky.

At dusk and dawn the colours of the sky change and the first portion of the visible spectrum is what appears to the viewer. During these times of the day the sun is positioned at a different angle to the earth than during the normal daytime. Because of this angle, the longer wavelengths are the ones that reach the eye. The blue and other shorter wavelengths are scattered millions of times and do not reach the viewer. When the sun does not shine directly on a certain portion of the earth there are more gas molecules between the viewer and the sun. Therefore, the normal blue colour of he sky is no longer visible because the short wavelengths of blue and green are scattered millions of times and do not reach the viewer. Therefore the longer wavelengths that couldn't be scattered as many times are able to now hit the viewer in a more direct way.

But the question that now arises is that the sunrise and sunset should appear to be the same. In reality, they are actually quite different. The sunset tends to be brighter and contain more vibrant colours than the sunrise. This is due to the fact that during the day animals and humans are usually awake and kicking up dust and dubree that will reflect the light. This refection will make the colours in the sunset appear to be brighter than those in the sunrise.

Lastly, if the sunset or sunrise of a big city is observed, it will be evident that the colours are more varied and tend to appear prettier than a sunset or sunrise that one would see in the country. This fact is because the sky surrounding the cities is more polluted than that around a rural setting. The pollution in the air has many chemicals in it that will break the light up in different ways and scatter it differently than the normal atmosphere would do. Though it is unfortunate that some of the prettiest sunsets can be seen due to pollution, it is a fact.

Most people go through their days without noticing what is happening in the sky above them. Even if they do wonder why our sky is the way it is the answer is not important enough to them to find. Most people just settle for the fact that this is how the world works, we have a pretty sky that changes colours due to the time of day and the weather. So, take a look at the sky and notice what is going on. Source

thanks greeting lou

Hello Anna,
Congratulations and very well celebrated with this beautiful image. Yes, it is truly awesome and such a pleasure to view. Well done and best wishes.

PS: I apologise for pointing this out but it seems to me your source made two errors in the second paragraph: "...blue light is scattered in more directions than the shorter wavelengths..." (It is scattered more than the longer wavelengths), and "...violet...has the longest wavelength of all..." (Violet has the shortest wavelength in the "visible" spectrum but the human eye does not really see violet)- My remarks in brackets.

Ciao Anna, congratulations for your splendid 150th post on TN, lovely fascinating sunrise composition with wonderful waves, good warm colors and great light, very well done my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Congratulations on your 150th post, Anna.
Your get-away with Loot sounds wonderful. Hope he is feeling better by now.
What a lovely sunset... very romantic!
The shades of oranges and yellow in the sky are a perfect complement to the shades of blue and purple in the water.
I like how subtle patches of orange light are caught in the waves.
TFS. : )

Absolutely fantastic!! The foreground detailed on this photo is in perfect harmony with the setting sun. I have witnessed similar sunsets at Henties bay (Namibia), but this is the perfect capture of my imagination!! Congratulations.

Hello Anna,
First of all congratulations on your 150th posting. What a gorgeous sunrise image to commemorate the special occasion with. The colors and wave action is simply beautiful.
You hit the nail on the head when you stated that we many times we fail to notice the beauty in the skies above. I am often quite guilty of this same thing. I'm glad you didn't hesitate to capture this special moment when you had the opportunity.
Hope things go well with Loot, I'm sure he is in the best of care. Rosie and I are presently in Oklahoma visiting two of our granddaughters. I know you can certainly appreciate that.

Hello Anna

Congratulations for your 150th post.

Hello Anna,
What a stunning image for your 150th posting. Truly a beautiful shot of this sunrise. There's a saying "the early bird catches the first worm" and in your case it's true. One can only get a shot like this if you are there to see the sun rise on the horizon. Excellent my friend and tfs.
Wishing Loot a speedy recovery.

Dear Anna,
breathtaking image! The sun touching the horizon, just emerging out of the waters - phantastic. Enormous depth, fabulous contrast of deep cool blue and hot red. A very artistic, deeply passionate poem to life and to the elements in motion. My congratulations to you for this masterpiece, and all my best wishes to you!

Anna, thank you very much for the warm words of welcome you gave me after my returnal from a several months' absence from TN a few days ago.

Hello Anna,
very lovely and lively view of this sunset. The fire ball is so pretty and so sharply rendered. The softness of its colors blend so well with the sea water and gives an everlasting prettiness.
The moment of the wave too is well frozen to give a splendid serenity and tranquility.
Really a superb view to share.

Hello Anna,
congrats for you 150th posts, I do remember when you started and also remember your Kingfisher, time flies.
This is a very fine seascape picture with amazing colours.
The composition is also fine with the sun out of centre and the horizon placed perfect in the frame,
Very fine work my friend.

Hi anna,
Congratulation for your 150th post!!
This sunrise is fantastic, colours and composition are very beautiful.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Anna,

The simplicity of the composition is calling my attention, and I suppose it is no reason to try to improve the artwork of nature!
The three basic elements sea, sky and land are merging into a beautiful unity as the sun rise for another wonderful day...
Well framed scene with great details, amazing colours..!

Hello Anna
Congrats on number 150! And what a beautiful sunrise it is. From experience I know that it is very difficult to get the exposure right if you take a photo direct into the sun, but you got it just perfect! The exposure on the water is perfect as well, the waves breaking and the movement in the water, all in all a beautiful seascape! Well done! Look forward to your next 150!
Interesting note as well.
Take care and happy snapping

Hi Anna,

Oh, I missed your 150th - I'm so sorry. A magnificent sunrise for the celebration. The colors are sensational. I love the contrast between the bright sky and sun and the darker crisp details of the breaking waves. This is really beautiful. Here's to your next 150.

I love sunsets pictures and this is one of the best I've seen. Glorious colors and a very effective composition. Congratulations!

Hello Anna! The shimmering sun, and it's reflections on the water make this a perfect sunrise! Great point of view. You've even captured the spray on the wave tops. What a glorious canvas! Thank you, Linda

Hi Anna, Sunrise is my favorite time of the day, when peace just envolpes you and nature put's on a show for all to admire!
