Charadrius alexandrinus Linnaeus 1758. Juvenile
Kentish Plover

Charadrius alexandrinus is a small plover (family Charadriidae) with a length of 15-17 cm. It has greyish brown upperparts and white underparts in all plumages. It has an incomplete breast band which just appears as dark lateral patches on the sides of the breast. These breast markings are black in summer adults, otherwise brown. The legs are black.
Breeding males of some races have a rufous cap, a black forehead bar and a black mask through the eye.

It breeds in a wide range, from southern Europe to Japan and in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, the southern USA and the Caribbean. The subspecies in the Americas are called Snowy Plover. Despite its English name, this species no longer breeds in Kent, or even in Great Britain
Charadrius alexandrinus breeds on sandy coasts and brackish inland lakes, and is uncommon on fresh water. It nests in a ground scrape and lays three to five eggs. The breeding birds in warmer countries are largely sedentary, but northern and inland populations are migratory, wintering south to the tropics. In many parts of the world, it had become difficult for this species to breed on beaches because of disturbance from the activities of humans or their animals

In Cyprus Charadrius alexandrinus is a breeding resident, a passage migrant and a winter visitor. Numbers are occasionally in three figures, particularly from September to April after a successful breeding season and when winter visitors and passage migrants boost numbers.
According BirdLife Cyprus, the breeding population has declined over recent years.
