Phalera bucephaloides (Ochsenheimer 1810)

Phalera bucephaloides is a moth of the Notodontidae family. It is found in Europe, Turkey and The Middle East. The wingspan is 55-73 mm. It has a characteristic white spot on the apex of the fore wings which with the buff thoracic hairs give it a twig –like appearance at rest. It is similar with the species Phalera bucephala (Linnaeus 1758) (Buff-tip)
The larvae feed on Quercus and Arbutus species.

In Cyprus Phalera bucephaloides is a rare species found manly on the mountains.

In my WS I am posting a larva of this species which I found on Quercus coccifera.

I am posting also a photo showing the similarity of the wing markings with a broken twig.

Hi Christofoulos,

This is one of the finest examples of camouflage I have ever seen. It took a minute to realize that the moth was not part of the tree! Colors, shadings, details and textures are all excellent. I loved the workshops too.
