The Large Grizzled Skipper is not the most colourful butterfly but I think it is a small beauty.
It's a pretty rare in our county but locally it can show up in larger number.
The picture could be a bit sharper but it was a windy day and as it was sitting a small straw it was difficult to lock the focus.

Large Grizzled Skipper
The Large Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus alveus) is a species of skipper (family Hesperiidae). It is distributed throughout most of continental Europe but is absent from Denmark and practically all European islands including Great Britain, Ireland, Azores, Balearic Islands, Channel Islands, Canary Islands, Crete, Cyprus, Iceland, etc.

This is a rather variable species with a wingspan of 22-32 mm (not always particularly "large") with several subspecies having been described. As with most Pyrgus species it has dark brown wings with pale chequered margins and is rather difficult to identify specifically in the field but good views reveal clear, well-spaced white spotting on the forewing and much fainter markings on the hindwings. The most likely confusion species is the Safflower Skipper (P. carthami). P. alveus is on the wing from June to August with one or two generations produced each year.

The larva has been recorded feeding on Agrimonia, Helianthemum, Polygala, Potentilla and Rubus

This capture of a fresh male is superb with excellent sharpness and natural colours, the open wing pose taken from an ideal POV with just the right DOF to provide a nice gren bokeh BG.

Hi Gert.
Blameless picture of the cute skipper. Amazing wingspread and upper POV, I like air smooth BG, whose colouration and illumination are fine and which isolates the butterfly from surroundings perfectly. TFS and kind wishes.
P.S. What do you think about Sony A77? May be I will see it in your hands.
