This is a head picture of a Vagrant Darter (Sympetrum vulgatum), the picture was taken after a chilly and damp night, and dragonfly where looking for warm themselves in the first sunlight.
One can get quite close to them and they are not so inclined to flee when they are cold. The picture was taken with a Canon 20D and a Sigma 180mm macro and of course a tripod.

About the Vagrant Darter:
The brick red meadow dragonfly got its common name of the shade of the male's red color on the abdomen. The female is more subdued in color and more brown than red. The wings are transparent with brownish wing mark. Wing mark in the male is more attractive than brown in the female. Wingspan is 50 to 65 millimeters. Rear wing length is 24 to 29 mm and abdomen length is 24-28 mm.
The brick red meadow dragonfly found in much of Europe, except in the British Isles, where it only occurs in the southwestern United

Hi Gert,
What a great close-up. Those eyes are sensational, the details, amazing. I love that snot coming from its nose. I know it was chilly but I wonder if it had a cold, can Dragonflies catch colds? Really fantastic.

Hi Gert.
I love this picture and remember it very well. I am glad that you have reposted it. It is a brilliant of the TN gallery. Soft lighting, details, colours, combination of sharpness of the main parts of the splendid insect and blurriness of the BG as well as framing and composition of the shot are the best. Thanks a lot and my warm greetings.

Hej Gert,
Jag vet inte varför jag missade denna pärla!

A superb macro showing the frontal view of the head of Sympetrum vulgatum. The sharpness and DOF are maximum, with perfect use of the available lighting showing the structure of the compound eyes and other facial features with amazing clarity. The Sigma 180 is a great lens and you use it with fine skill!
Thanks and I hope you enjoy your winter in Cyprus!

Hoppas ochså att du är nu återställd. Här är det fortfarande milt men vintern närmar sig - 2 minus imorse!
