[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken on probably the nicest day of the Summer 2011. Where did the season go so quickly & why does the sky appear so much more deeper blue on some days than others?

Anyway, there was a symphony of birdsong & scores of dragonflies zipping about in the meadow behind the house. Eventually I spotted this 12-spotted skimmer's wings glittering in the morning sunlight & sitting alone & high atop an alder branch - busy scouting out the air traffic & her next meal.

Five minutes passed & she seemed to be content with her perch & view - so I went down to the tool shed, grabbed a stepladder in so that I could get a bit closer to this sort of 'Dragonfly heaven'.

On the top rung, balancing on one foot & with the camera over my head, I managed to squeeze off two shots - before she departed.

The Twelve-spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella) is a common North American skimmer dragonfly, found in southern Canada and in all 48 of the contiguous U.S. states. It is a larger species averaging about 2"(50mm) in length.

Females & immature males are brownish black, the side of the thorax is marked with two diagonal yellow stripes, and each side of the abdomen is lined with yellow. They lack the white wingspots & pruinose blue abdomen exhibited by adult males.
