[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This Ghost of Okaukuejo, I dedicate to Neels (Corjan). Neels, you were my tutor with your positive criticism from the very first photo I uploaded on TN. You made me realise what photography is about. I sincerely hope that I have not disappointed you from there on? You traveled through the whole of Namibia with your Geo-logistical expeditions and must have seen similar sights as this before. Thank you my friend!!
On the 27th of August late afternoon while returning to our camp Okaukuejo, we stopped at a waterhole to observe a lone Elephant who just arrived at the waterhole. I slowly edged me vehicle as close as I could to the Elephant. Suddenly he swung away from the waterhole (bottom left in the photo) and charged my vehicle. Trying to be a brave photographer I froze and just pressed the button. The Elephant bull stopped about five meters from my vehicle and slowly returned to the waterhole to quench his thirst. When studying the photograph afterwards, it became apparent that this Elephant bull has been away from water for quite awhile due to the Limestone mud peeling from it's ears and forehead.
Enjoy and comments are welcome,
Carl

Hello Carl,
It is not easy to describe to someone who has not experienced it the golden late afternoon Etosha sun and here you show it at best. And what a fabulous image of my favourite animal! Great work my friend!
Neels

PS: I still do not know why they spray themselves with the white limestone dust. I am humbled by your dedication and the friendship you express here is far more valuable. Thank you. Your talent and potential were always there and could not be missed.....and it has been a great pleasure to see it emerge.

Hi Boet,
What a magnificent animal. I can just imagine what it was thinking, that you've come to steal its water and it had to protect it at all costs. You were lucky it stopped. Fantastic shot with stunning sharpness and details. Truly a fantastic dedication to our friend Neels. Excellent!!!

This one ...reminds me of myself after my early morning culinary pirouettes..usually nicely prepared omelet, griddle-cake, cheese pie, home made pancakes or something where lots of flour has been used. The big fellow looks like an artist here! Good evening Carl...Happy 2012 my friend! Love your photography!

George Veltchev

Hallo Carl
I see you share your liking to elephants just as much as Natley does. What a spectacular image and wonderful and well worthy dedication to our mutual friend Neels. This image is a true "Arica style" and such a pleasure to look at and appreciate. I love the sunlight that highlights the colours of nature so beautifully. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna
ps. I do not know if it is my imagination but it seems as if you horizon is a bit tilted.

Hello Carl,
Again I can't imagine living in an area where the animals are as big, or even bigger then your vehicle. We do have moose here in the US, but they are not anywhere near my state of Ohio.
I love the exceptional detail in this shot and the way he is all covered with mud. Reminds me of my kids when they were younger. I'm not sure I would have been able to keep my composure and take this shot while he was charging my vehicle, but I'm glad you did. Great work!!
Ron

big picture for a big subject, excellent light and details,

Hi Carl
Just read your nice comments on my Bat-eared fox, went to your intro and saw that you are interested in positive critiques.
Well I had to go down to this picture as the last ones are close to perfection. In this one I see two problems easy to correct: I hate when the horizon is not straight, it throws an inperfection in the whole picture, very easy to correct with any post processing programm.
And there is a bad dust mark on the sky at the left edge, if not yet done go and clean your sensor, otherwise these spots are easily corrected with photoshop, clone and paste.
Tfs
Tom
