Hello friends in TN,

It is not common to see Common sailor around my place. This one was spotted by rice field canal on one early morning. I managed to get pretty close and took a few shots before it flew away.

Genus: Neptis Fabricius, 1807
Species: hylas Linnaeus, 1758
Subspecies: papaja Moore, 1875
Wingspan of Adult Butterfly: 50mm
Caterpillar Local Host Plants: Calopogonium mucunoides (Leguminosae), Canavalia cathartica (Leguminosae), Aeschynomene americana (Leguminosae), Senna alata (Leguminosae), Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (Leguminosae).

On both wings the cells are open, and vein 8 on the hindwing ends on the costa. Above, the wings are dark brown to black in ground colour and feature the usual white markings for Sailor species. A distinguishing feature is that post-discal spots in spaces 2 and 3 of the forewing are in echelon and are directed to the termen. There is no whitish ring on the abdomen. Underneath, the wings are rich golden ochreous in ground color, and nearly all white markings prominently outlined with black borders.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Jusni,
A nice double showing both the upper and under surfaces of the wings of the Common Sailor. Both images are well composed and taken from appropriate POV's with fine sharpness and natural colours to make this a fine illustration of this species of butterfly.
Interesting to see the blue reflection on the thorax, possible caused by the use of flash.
Thanks and have a good week,
Ivan
