Hello Mike,
Great shot of this beautiful Amanita Mushroom. There are about 600 species world wide, so it is very hard to pinpoint the exact species. This particular one looks alot like Amanita Muscaria.
Very attractive low POV and filled with nice detail and natural coloration. Well done!!
Ron
I agree with Ron, it seems A. muscaria, being exact Amanita muscaria var. guessowii Veselý, but without microscopical analysation we can't be 100% sure, mostly because there are many endemic species in this genus and most of those species are living only in America, like this varietas, not in Europe where I live. However, I advice to take a look on Prof. Rodham Tulloss' site http://www.amanitaceae.org/ , you get plenty of infos about the Amanitas, focused on American species.
If we're talking about focus, it isn't the best on your pic, the cap is unsharp. When photographing fungi, try to focus on the square centimeter of the fruit-body which is the closest to your position, in order to avoid unsharp parts and achieve the best possible DoF.
Best regards, László
